Honest game assessment query.

Post by JoeStracke »

I’m on the fence about purchasing the game; my interest in the genre combined with what little I’ve seen is working against the lack of a demo and rather (relatively) large number of posts in the tech support forum.

So, I what I’m wondering is how you lot feel about Distant Worlds: Do the pros outweigh the cons? I understand that taste varies and that nothing is perfect, and I am actually not concerned with specifics… but I’d be willing to lay down $40 on the sole basis of approval from a majority who seem to be on a par with my concept of entertainment. It's a nice, quite complex that has pretty much everything a 4x game should have. The bad side is we are mostly kept in the dark about future updates (if any are in the work). There hasn't been any updates in quite a while.

It's a fantastic game, since the last patch I have had no technical problems or crashes whatsoever (beyond a modding problem, but thats not to do with the actual gameplay itself).  But, there are still quite a few people posting in the tech forum so I can only speak for myself [:D]

I think it's a great game. It's not as customizable as I'd like, but from what I've read on the forums, the developers are addressing this.

Buy it. It's worth it.

There is plenty about to happen in the DW world Foraven...be patient. IMHO, your socks
are soon to be knocked off by this game..... [:D]

JoeStracke....BUY IT! You won't be disappointed! I haven't been. There
were some early issues that needed to be worked out. Even I experienced that. But I am
VERY satisfied I purchased what I feel will soon rate right up there with MOO2. (I know
that's saying a lot... but I'm a true GALCIV2/Star Trek/Babylon-5 game fan)

I have plenty of patience, but i would like some news once in a while. Ever since i got the game, i haven't seen any official post about what is going on. For all i know the game might have been dropped (like Hired Guns was).

Trust me Foraven, it hasn't been...that's all I can say. Hang in there!

There was some news just this week... Nothing set in stone but an update that an update is coming soon.

Before they announced the addon, it was the most active and receptive support I've ever seen for a game. I think they have decided they want to get the addon out at a reasonable date, probably decided to focus on that and not announce anything to they know a release date and exactly what features will be finished and included with it.

JoeStracke, this game is definitely worth a buy. It is already extremely fun to play and the more I learn the deeper it gets.

As far as I am concerned it is THE 4x strategy game out there, and as its still work in progress with the coming expansion will
have a bright future.

I like this game very much, but I can't play it currently because of 'missing messages' bug. I don't know if it will be fixed or not.

Back in mid April, I read the forums, looked at the available videos, and decided to buy. I spent $1000 on a new machine and $80 on the game. Since then I have played in (1400 star) galaxies until victory on over a half dozen games. By clock time that was over 1800 hours of game play ago. To put that into perspective, I have played over 75,000 hours of strategy games since 1990. I have nothing better to do with my time, in case you wondered, and play 12-16 hours per day - every day. I rate this game as the best 4x space empire strategy game which I have ever played. There are a couple of recent 4x games which I have missed in the selection of available games, so I cannot honestly say that I know it is the best 4x ever, but it is surely in the top five.

This game is NOT dying, take my word for it...

Lol Jeeves, my brother gets paid to play games and he doesn't play as much as you.

DW is definitely worth it. It is one of only two games that I really care about atm (the other is a lone wolf space sim so different kettle of fish). I'm actually slightly sad because I think DW has ruined turn based 4x for me but I am so glad I found it. I can't put the number of hours in that Jeeves does but I'm sure I will rack up at least 1800 hours in this game eventually.

But the great thing is you can have fun from minute 1, no need to spend ages going through tutorials or learning the interface before being able to play. Just dive right in and let the AI manage things while you learn your way around. Like other grand strategy games you can easily spend weeks of real time playing it, unlike most others you don't have to invest 10-20 hours before you know enough to have fun.

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... ideo_games

also there is a page for text based REALLY old games which I recall playing when I was still working for a living.

I counted over 30 I have played before I stopped counting. Guess who just got added to the list - see 2010 at the bottom. TADA BOOM BOOM - Distant Worlds!

DW is a great immersive 4X game that has an epic scale that is unmatched, but it lacks the actual strategic choices, tactical depth or even race differentiation of MOO2,SOTS or even Armada but I am hoping the expansion packs adds more actual strategy to the game and makes races more unique.

Can you tell me WHERE they post news? It's not in this forum, nor on the developer home page. The ones i read are pretty old...

Mentioned here recently:

You are right though, they really need a news thread or something, or at least post on their site [:D]

Being my favorite genre, I have played pretty much every space empire builder the last .... well more years than I care to admit. :) It's super stable on my Win7-64 system and I have not experienced any bugs or problems. It has a very unique feel to it which keeps me coming back every few weeks for another play. I am really looking forward to seeing where they take it, but its darn good as it is.
