Opinions, please

Post by Dean Robb »

In my current game of v3, I've given Addu Island a 10 point shipyard to simulate various shipyards out of the theater that Brit ships could have been repaired in. It doesn't seem to unbalance anything, and does help to keep the RN in the fight. It's a small yard value to help simulate the travel time, lack of specialists in warships, etc.

Opinions on whether this is a good thing?

:p For whatever it's worth, I agree, the British should have some shipyard capacity. In game terms, there is no way to send ships in the Indian Ocean to Britain or other ports for repairs (except if the ship gets recalled.)

My vote would be against. The Allies already have the edge--why give them more help? If the Allied player wants faster ship repair he needs to build up his ports with engineer units. (Remember that port capacity points help repairs as well as shipyard points.)
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

It just seems out of whack for the poor RN, though, to lose so many ships for virtually the entire game. Between slow repairs and the monthly pull-outs, they never seem to get to *do* anything...

The RN doesn't get to do anything? Well, it depends on how you play them. If you keep the ships at Rangoon or Northwards, not nearly as many of them get pulled out. And I've found I can repair ships fairly quickly if I put just one damaged ship in each port. In versions 2.3 and 3.0, there are several ports with capacities of 4 or better.

Hmmm...that Rangoon Line thing is a new one on me. Definately could be a factor, though, because I do use them aggressively. I usually try to hang on to Medan as a jump-off for retaking the peninsula and use the RN pretty heavily for protection and bombardment to slow down the Japanese incursion.

Heh...last turn, I had a 3 flattop task force and two full bombardment forces totalling nine battlewagons. ALL OF THEM got pulled...:) All I've got left is about a dozen DDs and CLs. So much for my raid on Saigon...:(

except the rangoon line doesn't seem to work like it did before. I used both a sc and an ac TF to attack Rangoon and all the ships were withdrawn. don't remember the exact date, sometime in mid june.
