Public Beta for Hannibal v1.04 Now Available!

Hannibal: Rome and Carthage in the Second Punic War is a new and innovative turn-based strategy game that puts you in command of the Carthaginian military during a period of total war over land and sea with the young Roman Republic. With this military juggernaut of the ancient world at your disposal, you will vie for control over Italy, Carthage, Spain and the Mediterranean Sea using a combination of strategic political maneuvering and sheer tactical skill both on land and sea. Play consists of two layers; the first is a strategic layer where you must prudently steer your forces to the destruction of Rome’s army and the ultimate destruction of the Republic and city itself. At your disposal are a variety of unit types and historical commanders from which to form your armies. On the tactical scale, when meeting the enemy in battle, skilled leadership and a knack for war come into play as you use a simple but engaging battle system to best your opponents.

Public Beta for Hannibal v1.04 Now Available!

Post by Andrew Loveridge »

Hello All,

We have an update for Hannibal in the works, and have it as a Beta in the Members Club. It has improvements for the UI, Play Balance, and AI, in addition to some bug fixes.
Please remember this is a Beta, and any feedback is appreciated.

Change List
V1.04 – August 8, 2011
    User Interface:[/b][ul]
  • Mouse wheel scrolling is now supported in text fields which can be scrolled in the ordinary way.
  • Scrolling controls can now be set by clicking in the control's track. This is admittedly rather trivial.
  • When the "Surprise" option from Hannibal's Punic Tricks is in play the tiles will be marked with a circle as a reminder that all units receive a special bonus for the first round of combat. After the option is finished, all units will revert to their usual state.
Play Balance:
  • Hannibal no longer must receive a Command Phase each Campaign Phase, or, at a minimum, have one reserved for him.
  • There is a very slight increase in the rate of replenishment for the recruiting pool in Zeugitania at the “Normal” and “Hard” levels of play.
  • The assignment of a Command Phase can be undone by using the new “z” hotkey. This must be done before the leader moves, attacks, concentrates, disperses, or completes an Option Card play.
Improved AI Intelligence:
  • The AI now uses the “Roman Siege” cards more judiciously at the “Hard” level of play.
  • The AI makes better decisions when to use the “Rally One Legion” and “Rally Two Legions” option cards at the “Normal” and “Hard” levels of play. It also uses a better algorithm to determine which units will be chosen to be rallied.
  • The Roman Senate is now somewhat less aggressive about confronting Hannibal in Northern Italy after Hannibal has won a couple of victories.
  • Improved the AI decision-making logic at the Normal and Hard levels when de-ciding to deploy to the field. This corrects the situation in which the AI didn't re-gard leaderless Carthaginian armies as valid targets.
General Improvements and corrections:
  • Corrects an error that allowed a Roman leader to get stuck in a loop that could not be paused.
  • Corrects a rare crash that can occur when recruiting in Cisalpine Gaul and Philip of Macedon is active and located in that province.
  • Improved game logging when the game is initializing DirectX.
  • Enforce the rule that Elephants cannot be doubled as a result of the Inspired Troops option from Hannibal's Punic Tricks. The game was allowing this and it should not.
  • Pontian Aid has been renamed Illyrian Aid. The option works exactly as it did be-fore. But the previous name was somewhat anachronistic and Illyrian Aid is more accurate for the game's time period.
  • A few fixes for some minor and obscure bugs.

Excellent, downloading now.

When I first purchased this game, I was concerned at the price tag. Bought it anyway because I like the period, and because I am a sucker for old school games.

Well my concerns were misplaced. I am still playing this game and still loving it. I am also impressed that the game is still being supported, and not abandoned, like some others I could mention.

Keep up the good work! [&o]

James has corrected this error, Crash in version 1.04 beta, and a few other minor bugs. And I have put a new installer in the Members Club.
Please check it over, and let us know if you find any issues with it.

What an amazing wargame. I am a little stunned that more is not being said about it around the net, although the reviews I have seen have been overwhelmingly positive (including my own!).

You know, this system is the only one which really makes me feel like "I am there" - facing exactly the same sort of strategic decisions as Hannibal himself. And the AI is just a revelation. It is truly the best I've ever seen.

Anyway, I've been waiting since 1980 for a game to approximate the playing experiences I had as a teenager playing an old SPI wargame with an actual human - and here it is at last. It's a shame that, unlike back then, the market environment is so heavily skewed toward boring/repetitive FPS crap.

I'd love to see this system applied to Alexander's conquests, or the Roman Civil Wars. In each of those, you also have a single "superstar" commander (Alexander and Julius Caesar).

OK, back to trying to beat Hard just once!

This update crashed my Hannible game. I purchased from Slitherine and it does not like my serial code.

Did you try to use the game menu to update the game to 1.0.4 using the "Check For Update" button? You don't want to use the public beta now anyway, and the final version is available now.

So what does it mean when I try to run the 1.04 beta (which was playing fine last week) and I get this error message:

The application has expired.  This is a public beta.  Please see www.matrixgames.com for the final, permanent release.

EDIT: Something is screwy with this beta. I uninstalled the game, reinstalled and it launched without a problem. Installed the 1.04 beta and now I get the same error and it won't run. The beta appears to be breaking my game.

Please download the official 1.0.4 patch. There is no need to mess around with the public beta. It's obsolete.

I mistakenly put a 60-day expiration on the last beta patch. I should have said something earlier but I thought that everyone would just download the public version of 1.0.4 when it became available.

I'm sorry for your trouble. If you have any problems with the official 1.0.4 patch please let me know.
