I had a dream: "DW: Economica" expansion pack

Post by nukkxx5058 »

I would love to see a deep and massive improvement in the economic model in the next DW expansion pack.

Let's dream (or not?):

- Intergalactic monetary system
- Stock markets
- Realistic private and public debt management
- Banking and currency systems
- Choice of economic model: Capitalism vs. socialism vs keynesianism vs. galactism vs alienism vs. etc.
- New characters: economists, bankers, rogue traders
- Realistic commodities market prices based on sophisticated supply and demand model
- Raw materials shortages and depletion
- Economic terrorism

and much more :-)

No?

The inclusion of these ideas would give me a significant chubby.

I would also like it if the private sector was actually comprised of individual companies - Secura Caslon or Terran Steel Group for example. Companies could expand to other empires and could act eventually as powerful interests in their own right, influencing policy and relations.

Further development of the private sector in the next expansion would make a lot of sense. It is one of the areas where DW completley distinguishes itself from other games - the living universe concept could become so much more...

It really can only get better, I hope. I like these ideas. How cool would it be to just keep fleshing all the little features out (but not compromising the 4xyness) for years and years and years? I'd buy 10 more expansions, if they were all as good as Legends. No rush. You could keep this game alive for ever.

my dream of dw economics (in the short term)... we all need to think of new and interesting ways to encourage people who would enjoy dw to buy it.

I have no idea what goes on behind the scenes at matrix and code force... but if the legends expansion sold 2000 boxed set units that would only be $59,980 gross. now just imagine all the expenses and salaries, etc. that have to paid out of that gross amount... and taxes... just to make legends. I can say for certain that Elliot and Erik don't just work on DW... they live it; all day and every day of the week. I'm sure there are more folks behind the scenes. On top of that, they keep working on it! Not resting on release, but pushing as hard or harder than they were since well before October.

I don't care how dedicated you are, you need to earn a living for yourself and your family.

if we want DW to improve and continue we need to get units out the door to fund development and the work already performed.

my two rupees on dw economics.

Oh, I know. I'm speaking of the long-term. Even if they're all out of expansions, the life-span of this game is incredible. Especially we had the ability to mod in some of the new systems we want, in the event that codeforce decides to some day move on to something bigger and better.

A game for bean counters would be a nighmare to me. Heck a newbie can't balance the budget now, add union strikes, credit debt, IMF, mega corperations, etc.

Though adding a random effect like space lawyers would be fun. A random event where one pops up in the depths in space, and soon all the galaxys economy's go bankrupt unless they buy "protection" insurance. ie buy more lawyers, thier worse then tribbles.

Still a MOO3 like excel in space is one expansion i would avoid like the plague.

lol, while I feel exactly the same way, DW has apparently invented a genre where ease-of-access (to a point) and minutae can co-exist. I'd like to see just how far we could take it.

I was just thinking of writing something about this on the forum. Corporations could be individual entities like pirates. And the player would be give the power to interact with them from the start. At first they would take over the private sector, outcompeting them, giving the player economic and research bonuses. Then corporations would spread between empires competing between themselves, in the late game if players dont control their growth a few major corporations will acquire monopolies of certain goods, and perhaps become dangerous by involving themselves in starting wars that would increase their profits, or starting wars against powers that try to put them under control or refuse to do business with them. Also in the late game they would build their own small but hightech fleets to protect their interests. Perhaps players could also play as corporations if they wished... would give the game even more replay value.

This all sounds very complicated to integrate, especially considering how corporation AI would interact with Empire AI. But perhaps a 'lite' version of this could be considered for the next expansion.

A financial system is necessary for an advanced economy to function in practice, but it is financial disorders, manipulation and abuse that attracts attention and would be the "fun" part of it. Enough games have foundered on the financial and monetary side of economic models that increase processing load and generate results that make few players happy and generate complaints about screwy results whether the model is crude or less crude. Representing the private and state sectors is already a big advance over the usual run of game, and captures an important issue.

True that results are screwy in reality as well, but it is cheaper, faster, and safe to add additional events and decision points to enhance the player experience without the risk of screwy results.

I'd be wary of going too far with the economic elements as they could make the game more complicated and less fun if you aren't careful, but fleshing out the private sector a bit strikes me as a potentially interesting mechanic. Maybe a means by which the player could specialize his private sector to get bonuses or something like that.

It is my dream, too.  The next expansion should be on the private sector.

I'm sure of my self that I will get another expansion(s) if it will be made.

But I'm really not sure about adding more element in economy, especially in monetary way.
To be honest, I do not like bringing in our current methodologies to future telling games.
It is in 2750 and later and still using same old way to do things?

For political elements, I'm convincing my self that those are just improved version of current models.

I mean already the fact that all empires share same currency is already good enough.
Of course it is for game play simplicity sake.

Please don't make this into some kind of monetary simulator. I like real resource but not too much blah blah on currency it self.
Currency is just tool.

I wanna see more battle/strategy/tactic elements. Stronger AIs and new weapons.

I'll buy any expansion codeforce release, that is a given.

I like the ideas expressed by the original OP. More depth in the economic model would be great. I also wish we could see more details on how the economy is actually functioning, with a greater breakdown on where the cash is coming from and more options to control that.
