Battle so far...

Post by Althered »

So far so good. Game seems stable and I have had just one crash up to now. At one point the menu overlay stopped working, meaning I could not progress the turn.I discovered that when I moved a unit it started working again,so do that if it happens to you. The graphics overall look very good and the colours are spot on.I am playing on a 28inch monitor and everything looks big!! I am not sure what resolution it runs in and my desktop is 4k, but it wont` be that.
I was initially very surprised at just how similar it is to the original games but after a few hours I can see some major differances and the whole experience is slicker and more polished. Only downside is moving units when zoomed in can be tricky because the map will not scroll down. I would have liked the wasd keys to be available for moving the map because I do not like the arrow keys on the right of the keyboard. Gamewise, I have just lost France. I tried my old tactics of stalling the advance but everything happened pretty quickly once the low countries were lost. The AI made no attempt at Sealion and started sending units for Barbarossa straight away. I have made several costly mistakes and my battle with the Italian Navy went badly. Not defeated, but I am awaiting the US fleet to help me out. I also dragged my feet sending reinforcements to Egypt whilst wrapped up in the North Atlantic U Boat war. Egypt will be lost next turn. Barbarossa was quick and brutal. Moscow is besieged but the winter has set in and I am fighting back. Finland could cause problems but despite being at war with me they have not launched a single attack.

Update
Egypt has not fallen, mainly due to a lack of attacks(no supplies?) by the Afrika corps in the last few turns. Moscow has also survived due to the winter arriving at the right time. Leningrad has fallen after a truly heroic defence. There are a huge number of axis units in the vicinity and it will be interesting to see what the AI does with these forces.
The oil fields in the caspians have been overrun due to my incompetance in not sending any forces down there, because of a shortage of men. Hope that doesnt come back to haunt me !(see below...)

Update 2
Enemy is still camped outside Moscow and whilst I thought it was safe,I am now suffering repeated enemy attacks which I simply cannot match. Any resources I have just go to reinforcing units and there is a staggering amount of enemy approaching from Leningrad. Nothing can save Russia.
As mentioned above,I have made numerous mistakes.Just trying the new stuff and not concentrating enough on winning!
I still have not cleared Africa and a planned surge through Persia is still a while away, may not happen if Russia quits.
I need D-Day but do not yet have the units. My aircraft are no match for the enemy and I am trying to strengthen my research but I need resources everywhere!

Update 3
Things are better but Russia is still a big problem and Moscow has gone. Turkey is in the war but the Caspians are better protected.Me and the axis are playing cat and mouse trying to cut each other off from the oil.
I have, frankly, messed up in North Africa and although most of it is now mine there are still major units tied up. I was surprised when I launched an opportunistic invasion at Sicily because the Italians made no attempt to engage in combat (!)
I have fought and won a major naval battle in the North Atlantic. In fact, victory enabled me to launch D Day which started off as a simple raid to attract units from the east and help the russians. However, the germans here did not put up much of a fight and no units in any quantity transferred from Russia.Paris will be mine soon unless the AI takes retribution.
Game is currently in summer 1943 and I will report back. Enjoying it so far!
