7th Panzer Army?

Post by gwgardner »

I'm not going to kibbitz this. I'm thrilled with the new scenarios, and realize at this scale some liberties with the OOB will occur.

Was the fictitious 7th Panzer Army included simply for balance purposes in the '41 scenario?

I wouldn't take the denomination quite so literally as the units don't represent Panzer Armies. There were too few Panzer Groups in Germany's order of battle in 1941 to enable a strong advance into the USSR if represented on a 1 to 1 basis. If anything it is named after the 7th Panzer division, even though it is acting a larger formation in this game.

I said I wouldn't kibbitz this, but it really bothers me.

As I understand it now, the representation of panzer units, in the 1941 scenario, is based on what type of panzers were present, as opposed to the actual panzer formations. Thus there are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 7th Tank units at the start of Barbarossa.

Whereas historically those were Panzer Armies, with the exception of the 7th. Armies made up of generally 2 or 3 Panzer Corps, plus mech divisions.

So what we're seeing in the 1941 scenario has no resemblance to history with regard to the German panzer units.

I would MUCH rather see the true panzer armies on the map, than these fictionalized units. For example, break the 4th Panzer Tank unit (the 4th Panzer Army in history) into weakened units representing the corps that actually made up the 4th Panzer Army, as in:

XXXXI Panzer Corps = XXXXI Tank at strength 5
LVI Panzer Corps = LVI Tank at strength 5

Yes, the player will end up trying to reinforce those units to full strength, but that will be costly and time consuming.

If the above is out of the question, then at the very least please get rid of the 7th Tank! It was NOT historically equivalent to the Panzer Armies.

Ok, I'll change the name to something less bothersome. [:)]

at strength 5

When I was playing the stock campaign it seemed like units were very easy to evaporate, so I had to try to keep them all at 10. If those units start at 5, won't they get evapped fairly easily ?
