At the closest zoom levels all the rest of the landscape - surrounding the battle area - is blacked out. Is this working as intended? If I zoom out futher then the rest of Finland appears.

Yes. Currently depending on the 'map detail distance' setting the background disappears when zooming in. Otherwise it would be very pixelated.
