AI moves my units after I end my move

Fury Games has now signed with Matrix Games, and we are working together on the next Strategic Command. Will use the Slitherine PBEM++ server for asynchronous multi-player.

AI moves my units after I end my move

Post by grahamsh »

I am playing Germany in the 1939 Campaign on Intermediate.

During and after the attack on Poland, when I finish my move and press the End Turn button the AI then moves some of my land air and sea units.

Ships I placed in harbour are moved out to sea in the Baltic.

Air units were moved inside Poland.

Army units I had moved up to the French border are moved back into West-wall hexes.

Why is this happening? Can I stop it?

Well I discovered the answer myself. When choosing which side to take. If you click on one of the country icons it gets a tiny asterisk and a little message appears underneath to say that the AI will move any units that I do not move.

That thought was not wrong. I grew up in the 60's. I played War In Europe on a map 3 meters by 3 meters with thousands of counters. But I have also played almost ever computer wargame ever made with Hearts of Iron one of my favourites. Including many variations over the theme of Strategic Command. I also worked 30 years in the computer industry for one of the biggest computer companies in the world, specializing in user interfaces and user experience including class rooms where we tracked user eyesight and mouse movement.

Normally I would have expected the option to have the AI move units that I have not moved myself to be more explicitly shown.

Country:...................Controlled By:......AI control of unmoved units:
Germany....................Human...............-N-
Italy......................Human...............-Y-
Britain....................AI..................--

As it is the option is not even shown unless you mouse over or click on one of the country icons. Yes it is in the manual, but I didn't expect to have to read that to be able to start a game. :D I just chose Axis and clicked on Germany but didn't notice the small text (2560x1440 resolution). So I didn't suspect anything until my units started moving around by themselves.

After I posted here it didn't take me too long to find out where the option was "hiding".

Hope you have as much fun playing computer games as I have.

Interesting, my background is very similar. I used to play War in Europe on the floor with my friends in the 70's. One of the first buyers of SC1 & PG. Really wanted to like HOI but never got there.

I started my career as a Fortran/Database programmer and then went into Finance. I was assigned to implementing PC's. Bought DOS 1.1 when PC's had two floppies from this little company in the Northwest. Could have been Bill Gates selling it to me for all I know , they had like 60 employees.

Enjoy the game.

PBEM's the best way to go IMO but you have to accept you will take a thrashing the first games

That's funny Benjamin. I thought you were a younger person when you suggested I was old. :D Actually HOI is not my favourite style, I mentioned it because it because I happen to have just played it. I prefer hexes and counters with NATO symbols like in the Decisive Campaigns series and Grigsby War in the East (and West). Nowadays though I just want to relax and push units about on a map. I will play just about anything though, such as Unity of Command, Close Combat or Order of Battle.

Thanks for your reply and the help I assume you would have offered if I hadn't already found it.
