Kiowa Scout Demise...

Post by Darren_H_slith »

I'm absolutely loving this game. But, I did have a pretty good chuckle the other day while playing "Hunting Bears 1/5" as the US. Ordered my scout helicopter to move hastily back behind my lines. Obviously this order did not get through or something - but both units allowed BDRM's to catch up to them. I was thinking..."C'mon guys! you're in a non-armored helicopter, and I'm pretty sure you can fly away at tree top without the need to take hundreds of rounds from these armored personnel carriers!" Then to my surprise, the AI called in an artillery strike to the hex, and it wasn't the ICM ammunition. Both helicopters went down!

I suppose it's possible, but it did make me laugh a bit!

Glad I picked this game up, but I definitely have not figured out how the software handles helos yet... I would have thought the pilots would have a bit more of a "pop-up and take a peek then run-away" doctrine.

What version of the Kiowa was in the battle? If helos start to take fire from an unknown source they will scoot away assuming they do not get shot down. Yes, artillery fire and ICM can take down hovering helos as well. We are improving the AI and SOP logic for the new Game engine as well. [8D]

It was the OH-58A, an elite unit.

It's been a long while since I played, but I remember being annoyed by the number of helos shot down by SAMs almost 15-20 or more hexes away. And those were low altitude helos. I question the probabilities to detect/acquire/engage for many of those shots. And if a helo takes a near miss, they should immediately drop and scoot. But I remember delays, where one helo would get shot down and then the other within minutes. Like I said, it was something that annoyed me and I'm hopeful SS handles this better.

@Darren, the A model is eyes only. No fancy optics dome or thermals. So it is possible to not see the BRDM until the bullets are flying.

@pzgndr, Helos do have to deal with a rough environment in Red Storm, but I don't think it is too broken. We are fixing the orders delay issues and doing some other things I can't go into yet to make a number of the shortfall issues of Red Storm better.
