Wasn't quite sure where to put so I took a SWAG.

This is a sportsmanship question. Does a Player who is clearly being beaten senseless with little hope of recovery have an affirmative obligation to toggle the white flag? What about a situation where the clearly winning individual asks for a surrender?

My Leonidas to Xerxes tends to be 'Molon Labe' My personal mild heartburn is with those who yield at the first hint of adversity.

What should the accepted social convention be here? Thoughts?

Should discuss first with opponent unless it is really obvious. Which isn't always the case until the game reaches 1944. It may look like the opponent is winning or losing but they may have made short term decisions that will hurt them severely in later years of the game or vice versa. And, they may want the game played out far enough to see how their choices affected things. I have had games where the German dominated the UK and USA side up until summer of 1942 then it became obvious they had over committed to the Western front and Russia started driving them back early.

Like Kennon I think it is as easy as talking directly to your opponent.

i recently conceded a game fairly early due to having lost virutually the entire english navy. i literally lost all of the carriers and the bulk of the battleships, and what i had remaining was severely damaged.

i also had suffered heavy losses in N africa.

i don't really know if it was the right move or not. my opponent was a MUCH better player, and he was going to have absolute control of the med and atlantic.

my point is, it's often a grey area. IMO opinion of the outcome is not in doubt and it's not a whole lot of fun to play, it's up to the player.

I recently resigned from a game where I was clearly whipped by my opponent (ComadrejaKorp) early. My opponent had suggested we stop when not fun anymore - which leads to my primary point. Once it isn't fun, there is a good chance the game will simply be dropped anyway. Better to resign IMO than to just let it fade, but best to communicate.

In my opinion there are moments when you can send hints offering an honorable exit. But if your opponnent has taken the decision to figth to the bitter end and try to turn the situation, you have to respect it and keep playing until he decides that the game is lost and let him to be the one that offers the surrender.

Agree if you are winning - I was approaching it from being on the losing side (misunderstood the point of the original post)
