Any Updates On Southern Storm?

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

Any Updates On Southern Storm?

Post by DawnRising »

It has been more than a year since the last dev blog (at least on the official website), I wonder if there is any update on the new game? Thank you!

Why not just give us a random scenario generator for FPCS ?

I've sort of tried it by just editing where the victory points are so I can send the Soviets on a long march round the map.

Then sit back and watch.

Yes a Scenario/Battle Generator would be a great addition and selling point.

The problem with a Scenario/Battle Generator is the way we have structured things like maps and data (formations and such). There is no easy way to "make a battle". That is why we have talented scenario makers for the game. We are looking at some things to make building a scenario for users much easier and maybe after the release, we can see if there is a path to some kind of automation. The biggest issue is setting some form of mission on a given map and then having the AI forces able to fight it well. Pretty much any game that does autogenerated missions is either so narrow in scope so they play okay or if really open in design lead to one-sided battles or odd/unrealistic fights. If we did something we would really want the scenarios to be close to as challenging as the handmade ones.

On our radar for sure. All I can say is wait and see what we are bringing to the table for Southern Storm. [8D]

Something to consider is making variations on the battles. TacOps did this with 8 different scenarios for a battle; e.g. Gallagher 1-8. Basically choices between MRR with BTRs vs BMPs, and how the MRR battalions were echeloned. Plus an easy on/off option for the extra tank bn.

Ideally, if this were done for SS, it would be great to have a random selection for a particular battle where 1 of the 8 scenarios is chosen at start and unknown to the player. The player would then have to fight a good counter-recon battle to confirm or deny what the enemy OOB and COA is. *THAT* would be great.

I would like to remember Assault: tactical Combat in Europe. What a fantastic game. You rolled for "Force Level" before a scenario and the level determined your force composition.

Cheers

We did before Red Storm and it had problems so we took the best parts for Red Storm and hope to circle back to the Mideast down the road with the new game engine. [8D]

Very new to the series, but what is the scoop in Southern Storm? I mean what is it? Middle East, the Balkans?

I've been trawling around in the threads here and watched the interview but not seen an answer to this:
Is this still slated for a fall 2021 release?

Jotte, It was noted in a few places and on the Slitherine Tea time podcasts that we moved back to early 22 to better accommodate our current workload and also production schedule placement with Matrix/Slitherine having a lot of games coming out between now and then.

As a form of update, we are building and testing the scenarios, coding the campaign bits, working on data updates and documentation, and weeding out bugs, and cleaning up some UI/UX issues. Very busy times along with our support for the Professional product. [8D]

Hi all,

Just wondering if SS will feature new and improved supply processes. Certainly not suggesting that we as players become been counters but units surrounded and cutoff should not be able to resupply either....somewhere in the middle perhaps?

Rob.
So we're at war with the Russkies eh?? I suppose we really ought to invade or something. (Lonnnng pause while studying the map)

@Rob, we have made a number of changes in the resupply model to work with a number of new features I can't talk about. Some of that work is ongoing right now as well, but other features have priority right now and we may be able to do more post-SS release in other areas.

@Jo, No date as of now, but we would like to start soon with a small number of folks. There are a few things on our end we need to work on to make the Beta experience better with some documentation and UI/UX additions. That is going on now as well as work on the Professional side. We will let folks know when Beta is coming. Trust me on that.

Take care folks! [8D]
