Barbarossa

Post by aoffen »

Playing my first PBEM game as the Axis and wondering what forces levels I need to invade Russia.

As it is my first game I am playing pretty historically to see how thing develop. I have put quite a bit of effort into the BoA and the desert war and am looking like I will have 6 elite Pz Corps, 3 Motorised corps and the usual infantry host for Russia. I will have another Pz Corp, German inf corp and almost all the Italian effort directed down in Nth Africa.

Is it enough or am I launching into Russia underdone?

Regards
Andrew

First off...you should launch your attack in 41. Russia is far to weak and waiting a year will just give them 20+ more units.

Your force seems a little light armor wise though...Any Italian armor?

I like to have 8 panzers and 4 mech...and then fill in Africa a bit after the attack starts and I can build another unit.

Manage your Panzer corps. Don't hesitate to make a pause during one turn. Also, try to keep them always in range of an HQ and at the latest technology.

Supply trucks, supply trucks, supply trucks...you should have multiple hundreds for the attack.

Also, try to surround units to prevent them to come back (new shatter rule).

So revisiting this thread. What are the thoughts re air support for Bargaross? Currently I have 4 interceptors 4 TAC air and 3 CAS. Feels quite light on. The question is - is it worth building more?

the old logic on barbarossa was to pour most of your resources into armor/supply trucks.

'pro' players usually eschewed additional air assets.

this may have changed, i've been gone a long time. i know supply trucks aren't the deal they used to be.

i built a large-ish air force once, though. wore down the soviet fighters early, then had a LOT of stukas. and i found it useful and fun.

So basically, you are putting 8 Armor and 4 Mech in Russia?
I am trying to improve my Barbarossa. But, my build list after France 1940 is poor because I have problems to reach these numbers in time. Do you attack in May? June?

My basic rules for what I need:

10 Panzers, no more
A couple of extra bombers
An extra fighter (or two), mostly for the Med/West
Lots and lots and LOTS of infantry, can never have enough
I don't use supply trucks much anymore, rather have reserve units and cycle the frontline

I do switch things up in every game though. A clear favorite I haven't tried in the latest patch was escort fighters, they are simply excellent for Germany

Why not a few more panzers instead of building extra bombers?

Bombers are better for winning hard battles. When you need to fight some Siberians or tanks more panzers won't help, more bombers will.
