Only in the sense that the unit normally has lower supply, and is therefore less effective.

Really? I also seem to get significantly worse odds for units attacking out of a marsh hex, even if the unit has decent supply and readiness. The effect seems to be roughly comparably to attacking across a river.

Yeah I've noticed what seems to be something like 1/3 to 1/2 penalty when attacking out of a marsh compared to a unit in any other hexes with about the same supply/morale/readiness.

Yes..I have notice 'more' of this effect while attacking out of marshes also..in both SC-WaW and SC-WW1. It seems there's more than just the 'supply' effect going on here.

Hence,I tend to avoid attacking out of swamps because of this.

Yeah I agree. I have noticed strange marsh attack or defense behavior that I am not sure how to explain from defense bonus or supply values alone.

Ditto here. I recently looked up the terrain effects in the Editor and could not see what was causing my attacks from marsh hexes to have such poor results.

Seems there's quite a few of us that have noticed this. I would hazard to say that it seemed to make sense [to me] in some regards that attacking 'out' of a swamp would have some detrimental effect...but currently..[and for as long as I can remember], attacking out of a swamp has pretty notable penalty.

You are right, I've spoken to Hubert and there is a section in the code that means that a terrain type with a negative defense bonus (which applies to marshes) means that attacking out of the marsh is also penalised.

The penalty is that the defenders' losses are halved, so attacking from the marsh is not normally a wise thing to do.

I'll have a think about how to get this into the next Manual update.

Thanks for the follow up and confirmation of the penalty. So is marsh the only terrain type that impacts then? Also would be great to not only update the manual but have it appear in the properties screen for terrain in game.

Ahhh..that explains things! Thank you. Yeah, marshes are probably not the most ideal places from which to conduct an attack. [:D]
