Game crash during "prep IA" phase

Post by gap4452 »

Great game; however, this evening I am having an issue during the "prep IA initialization" phase just dumping out of the program to Windows with no error messages. Running W10 and had no issues playing some scenarios.

I started playing "Wacht Am Rhien" and the first game I went to save game 19 rounds. I was heading to a minor victory and then the bulge started to close in due to my new, inept gameplay. So I started a second game to correct my errors. (The USA came in from both sides of the bulge and took advantage of my lack of holding the line...pretty cool)

I do have the auto save game feature checked so it is saving every round. I also do my own save. Tonight on my 14th round I am getting the dump at around 40 percent during the Prep IA initialization phase. I have tried loading from my save and the auto save.

I tried to disable the save game check to see if that is an issue and the same problem takes place. I can start prior games to 14 without an issue. Now I am unable to get past round 14. I have tried to start a new save game during round 13 but when I try to advance to the next round I get the dump.

Any advice? possibly just a bad save game file?

I did edit to just say I am not getting any error messages.

Thanks!

If you could send a savegame from which i could recreate the bug to vic@vrdesigns.net that would be much appreciated. Will get a fix up asap but need an autosave. Best wishes, vic

Thanks for the response! I did erase all the auto save files and started a new game in an attempt to move forward (which I may add I am rolling the map!...kind of)

I was able to take the new game up to now round 18.

I will keep the save file if it happens again....

Re: Game crash AI Initialization

First off, congrats are building this great wargame! I finally bought it on Steam yesterday and am greatly enjoying it. I've been a fan of ATG and DC: Barbarossa as well, but this operational level game brings even more.

I haven't run into this problem in any of the stock scenarios, but I have consistently when attempting to launch a scenario designed from scratch using the map editor followed by the simple editor.

I followed your excellent scenario design tutorial found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7S1uEz69zA

When I couldn't launch my intended custom scenario, I designed a extremely simple 20x20 hex, two town map (VPs set for both) with six units per side just to see if I could eliminate any errors on my part following your scenario design video, but in all cases, launching the scenario for play results in a CTD at when exactly at 40% completion of "Preparing AI initialization".

Libraries used (in order) in the scenario are:

0) GermanyTroopsType
1) AlliedTroopsType
2) German Models
3) Allied Models
4) VR Basic Officer Card Library
5) German Officers
6) British Officers (my first scenario used American Officers - same CTD result)
7) VR Basic Lib
8) VR Weather Library

I'm looking into everything in the test scenario over and over, but can't find any errors at my end so far.

Any ideas?

Update: I WAS able to edit a stock mission, replacing all units with those of my choosing, and the game ran. I'm going to dig into this more. The issue might be with my custom map? I'll also look at the Lib settings on the stock mission to see what differences there are from my custom mission settings.

Did you place Victory Points (VP) on some hexes?

Thanks for checking. I did set VPs on hexes, both when I created a map for a scenario, and again in the SimpleEditor again. I've worked on 3 scenarios now, with three different approaches, with the following results:

1) New custom map in Map Editor + New scenario using the Simple Editor following the instructions in your video ->Runs OK on Human turn, then crashes at start of AI turn when AI loading at 40%. If I leave both sides as Human, the scenario runs fine for both sides.

2) Stock scenario (Stavelot Crossroad) with only units replaced by me, no other edits - Ran ok for both human and AI turn.

3) Stock map (Stavelot Crossroad again )with new scenario created by me with Simple Editor following video instructions again -> Runs OK on Human turn, then crashes at start of AI turn when AI loading at 40% on AI turn. If I leave both sides as Human, the scenario runs fine for both sides.

My problem seems to be with getting the AI to load and run.

I opened the stock Stavelot Crossroad scenario in the simple editor and saw that there are a few AI related Libraries that are not covered in the instructional video or included in the scenario you create in that video. I also noticed that when you ran the scenario you created in the video, at 17:10 you left both sides as human. That would prevent the crash I'm having, but of course, you can't play against the AI like that.

I'm thinking the problem is with missing AI related Lib files in the new custom scenarios. I'm happy to send you the scenario files if you want, but I'm 99% sure I've followed the video accurately after these 3 tries. :)

I appreciate your help on this. My best enjoyment from wargames is creating new scenarios in their editors.

Cheers!

FIXED! :D

Following up on this, I read through the scenario design sub-thread and came across the information you had here: https://www.vrdesigns.net/dc/doku.php

It says you must use vr_ai_lib to play against the AI. I loaded up AIEvents_V13 and all custom scenarios now appear to have working AI.

You may want to add a note on your scenario design video about this (no mention of it that I noticed), or link in the video to the latest scenario design documentation.

All the same, very happy with this. Thanks again for this great game!

Cheers!
