Vietnam_no3D.exe scrolling is broken

Post by zoikkis »

If you start the game from Vietnam_no3D.exe and load up a scenario, the scrolling is very jerky. It stops with every step for a while to think.

Confirmed with two different PCs: one running Win10(Core i9-9900, 32GB ram, RTX 2080Ti) and another Win7(older Lenovo laptop).

Doesn't matter much to me as the regular Vietnam.exe works without problems when scrolling, but might need some fixing.

Strange. Never observed that. Will keep a watch on that. Thanks for reporting.

I can confirm. I have loaded the same scenario (Giong Dinh) from the laucher and using Vietnam_no3D and there is a visible performance difference in scrolling the 2D map. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER.
Anyway I am impressed by the the game!
Keep up the good work!

Thanks for your kind words!

See the first and second bullet points here

for ways you can speed up map scrolling.

I will add to that FAQ the suggestion to use the Jump Map (hotkey J) frequently.

Also, in the forthcoming CSVN 1.01 (and beyond), we will be introducing a new feature, Options > Hex Jump, a dialog box for jumping to the specified hex coordinates. Quite handy for those long-distance pinpointed map jumps!

The no3D option is there for people who truly need it, who could not otherwise play the game normally, with both 2D and 3D. You would need it if the game would not launch, on an underpowered netbook for example. (I had a Linux netbook that would only run the game using Vietnam_no3D.exe.)

I confess to being totally stumped as to why 2D map scrolling would slow down using the no3D option.

The suggested workaround for this is to toggle ON Options > Scrolling > Scroll Bar.

Also try Options > Scrolling > Smooth Scroll toggled OFF.

Use the Jump Map (hotkey J), and when available (in CSVN 1.01 and thereafter), the new Display > Hex Jump feature.

Me too. It really doesn't work, the no-3D exec. It stutters all over and is much much slower than the ordinary ex. I would really like to use it as I never ever use the 3D screens, and would actually like to reap the promised performance benefits of using the no-3d exec, but they just don't exist. There's a bug of some sort and it's actually the reverse of what you intend - the no-3d exec is way, way slower and - worse - super-laggy. The scroll bar workaround mentioned above does work to fix the scrolling issue, but who wants to scroll using the scroll bar? Not me, anyway. Plus, it's more than just the scrolling - the clicking and so on lags, and even turn times. Thanks.

The real purpose of providing Vietnam_no3D.exe is for people with underpowered systems who literally cannot run the game the usual way. They might need to use Scroll Bar scrolling, but at least they can play the game.
