Breakdown unit

Post by AbeMuc »

Hi,

I recently used the Breakdown unit command forhaving more assets to create pockets. As the rules are now breaking down units take a whole turn. So you basically loose very much time.
I question that and would like to share my opinion. Breaking down a regiment in 3 Batallions should be able without such a big penalty as in reality the unit is already broken down. The 3 batalions of a regiment are organically there so I see no point of such a high time penalty.
Yes you can argue that there is some bureaucracy burden for example writing new orders and stuff. But in the military organization even if a commander orders a regiment to move/attack/defend the bureaucracy would be also there as there have to be written also new orders for the batallion commanders. So for me it makes not much sense to have a regiment stop a whole turn just to get them broken down, as they are already broken down.
I hope I could somehow explain what I mean, and I am looking forward to get some takes from other players. Maybe I am totally wrong and biased towward lesser corst as it would help me in my ongoing game ;-)

It's just that there is a logistics cost to having a Regiment and then sending one of its battalions away.
The other reason is that it's a choice and choices come with costs and dilemmas. I don't want people breaking up their regiments willy-nilly with no cost.

This is very situation dependent. Surely it may take a few hours to split a WW2 regiment (mostly the time to figure out where the battalion should actually go:))

but what if I am playing with day long turns? Or week long large scale scenarios? What if I have good C&C and high quality troops? Then waiting a full turn seems excessive. Or too little..why ONE turn? It's a lost opportunity for a more FUN game with asymmetric forces/choices :).

Splitting/regrouping could be handled as a readiness penalty instead. High quality troops recover faster from it and it is a better reflection of what actually happens

And perhaps easy to code and EASIER to play as there is no across turns book keeping.

Trust me, it is far more complicated to code, to allow players to break up units and move/attack them in the same turn (easy to do in setup as in the Setup Phase, the game doesn't "remember" any of your actions)!
This is one of those extremely (and I do mean "extremely") expensive things that I can think about but due to its expense, all the easy (code-wise) improvements take priority. Better bang for buck.

Fair enough! I pick my battles :) and I always appreciate how open you are about discussing development resources.
