How I won with a major Union Victory in July 1963.

Post by Yogol »

Hi! I finished the Grey and Blue campaign as Union (on Intermediate) and wanted to share with you how I got a Union Major Victory in May 1864.

As reference, here is the link to my post for the Confederate Major Victory in July 1863

1. I bought two divisions on each and every turn, plus one riverboat and one Cavalry Division.
Except when I could buy corps, the I bought two corps instead.
When I ran out of Cavalry Divisions to buy, I bought a second riverboat each turn.

2. With the rest of the money, I always repaired all my units to strength 8 on every turn (except my corps or HQ, those were repaired to 10).
If you don't do this, you will lose too much XP with them.

3. I moved my units to the front with railroading.

4. If I still had money after repairing, I researched in this order Corps Organisation, Infantry Equipment, Leadership, Cavalry Equipment, Industrial Technology, Production Technology.

Even when I got a hit on Infantry Equipment or Cavalry Equipment, I bought the second chit anyway. Even if the money is lost because you can only get to level 2, it makes you get that level a lot faster.

5. The only boats that I bought were river boats and didn't buy any balloons, mortars,... nor did I use any diplomacy.

6. I didn't buy or researched anything in the turns that I had to upgrade my Infantry or Cavalry. Upgrading takes precedent, because your units will fight A LOT better.

7. I used Cavalry to scout.

8. I didn't use any amphibious landing, but probably should have used the marines to do so.

9. I used Rail Movement to get my troops to the front ASAP (which cost quite a lot, like 100 MPP for a Corps but the price is definitely worth it).

.... .... .... ....

A. I had two groups (each with 2 HQ) in West Virginia, one straight down to Richmond and then further south, the other went south too, but further West.
I used quite a lot of Brigades to cover their western flank.

B. I had two groups (each with 2 HQ) in Kentucky, one that went south and one that went south-east.
I used quite a lot of Brigades to cover their eastern and western flank.

D. West of Kentucky, I only defended Missouri, nothing else.

C. In New Mexico, I let them come pretty far north, but as soon as the units in Fort Bowie show up, I started counterattacking with my units north and the units in Fort Bowie.

.

That's all folks, I hope you liked reading this and maybe you picked up a trick or two!
