Matrxgames Launcher question

Post by milkweg »

The launcher advertises new games and you can click on them to open in your web browser. On Win10 it is opening Internet Explorer instead of Microsoft Edge. Explorer is a security risk and has been discontinued so why is the Matrixgames launcher opening with IE11?

We'll take a look, but my guess would be that IE is still the default on your system for opening HTM/HTML links.

Nope, Firefox is the default on my PC. IE 11 files must still be a part of Win10 and are hidden from the user, that is until your launcher opened IE 11 on Win10 and exposed the truth.

OK, did some further testing. Warplan Pacific opened Firefox, CC Gateway to Caen opens IE 11. I guess it is an issue with older games.

Gateway to Caen and Starhammer Vanguard Prophecy are two, I'm sure I have more installed that do though.

Can confirm this for Star Hammer on Windows 11: an Internet Explorer window popped up, which I had not seen before (version Windows 11 21H2).

So the launcher used an IE component for it's ad-panel. That is how I built my desktop applications ten years ago. Little security risk I think, as the links only connect to Matrix/Slitherine sites.

The Store button however opens a new tab in Edge (my default browser), so only the ad-panel uses this component, which is understandable. I was surprised that the Store button opens the Steam store, not the Matrix Store.

Edit: I did some further tests:

Strategic Command.

I have War in Europe on GoG, World at War on Steam, and WW1 on Matrix (but I launch it from Steam).

The two oldest launchers use the Internet Explorer component, WW1 has a more modern component that links to the standard browser. The store buttons go to GoG or Steam respectively, an old Slitherine launcher for Panzer Corps goes to the Slitherine Store.

When Internet Explorer goes to the Matrix store, it asks me to accept cookies, but there is only a reject button :-) that nevertheless gives me access to the site.

Thanks for the information. Changing the launcher would mean remastering the installers, which isn't likely to happen in the near future given the workload that Operations has currently. But I will put it on the list.

Cheers
