Veterans commanded by Rookies Lowesy (J) v Invictus (A)

Post by LowesyPC »

Hello everyone welcome to the Japan side of a 1v1 PBEM between myself and Invictus (he has a few at the moment). This is my second Japanese PBEM, and I believe Invictus' first Allied one. So follow us as we go head to head, and see if two rookies can command veterans of Warfare on Land, Sea and Air.

So firstly the set up. 1st Scenario and standard rules you'd see for a PBEM.

The first action therefore was of course the Attack on Pearl Harbour.

Image

The Kito Butai launched their attack in the early morning of Sunday 7th 1941, and due to the failed attempts of 4 midget subs to get through the defences of Pearl some US aircraft were there to meet the attacking force. A few Wildcats, and Warhawks were airbourne but did little to stop the attack. All 8 American battleships were hit with both Bombs and Torpedos and although no confirmation of sunk Battleships, this has been put down to the shallow waters of Pearl.

Elsewhere attacks through the Pacific went as planned. The main focus of Japanese forces are the IJNs focus on the Southern Push after the failure of the IJA to secure China, although more news on that soon. Philippines and Malaya are the main campagins underway with bombing runs on the Allied Airbases in both areas, Clark Field took moderate damage according to our Bombers, and in Mayala the result was much the same. However, the IJA Airforce have reported a large loss of Ki-21s who were sent to attack Georgetown, the report from the surviving bombers suggests British Fighters were ready and waiting for them.

These fighters, identified by our pilots as F3Fs but in British colours, known as Buffalos are all over the Malay Penisula as they were also spotted over Force Z.

Our scouts and spies had informed the Japanese High command of the reinforcement of British Naval forces by HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse.

In the Morning G3M Nells and G4M Bettys launched an attack, and although our Nell pilots reported no hits, the Betty pilots reported some torpedo damage. It was decided that another attack would be launched in the Afternoon. This time the news was much better.
Image

With the opening moves of the war in place the Japanese high command settles back into its usual arguments. However, once again the Navy won through, the industry of Japan will be focused mostly on Aircraft for the IJN forces. With a new version of the Zero, an interceptor under the name Raiden and a new divebomber under the name of Judy. The IJA was given some consessions with a new fighter being focused for the IJA under the name Frank.

The Navy also readjusted some of the production of the Naval yards, with the Shinano being halted for the time being and focus being put on the Unryu and Amagi, although smaller and lighter armoured, the greater air capacity has been more appealing for the High command.

With the shift of attention to the Southern Resource Area and the focus of the High Command and strategy going the way of the IJN the Army has set in motion its own plans to win favour of the Emperor, with the 6th Army being redeployed into a more active combat role.

If you have not done so, look up Mike Solli's AARs as to how and why he set up his Japanese economy. There are also discussions about the various aircraft as well.

PDU On or OFF? That makes a big difference.

Day 2 - 8th Jan 1941

With the ongoing invasion of both the Philippines and the Malay Penisula the focus from the airforces of both the IJA and IJN is to weaken any enemy airforces.

In general the bombing missions were relatively light, our bombers report little more than a few hits on runways or the base itself, however little enemy aircraft. Recon aircraft are ordered to recon the airfields to discover where the aircraft are.

A lone Zero scouting over the Philippines did spot a large squadron of enemy P-40s. To deal with this more sweeps will be needed, hopefully this will deal with some of the enemy aircraft and allow the invasion to carry on smoothly.

Troops begun their landings at Kota Bharu, however, when the ships started to offload several British twin engine bombers attempted to attack the transport ships, however, the cover provided by our Ki-27s and escort ships meant that their attack was unworrying.

There were some attempts by American B-17s to strike both the base at Takao and Dabeldaob, once again, like their British counterparts they were unsuccessful. Zeros patrolling around Takao claimed to shoot down a B-17 and AA gunners on the land also reported a kill, reports however are not confirmed.

Reports from the IJN however are very promising. Makin Atoll has been captured, providing more points in our defence sector.

The Submarine forces also reported great success with I-25 reporting two torpedo hits on an American Destroyer (USS Ward)

Day 4 -10th Dec 1941

Due to some lost reports, details of the 9th Dec are incomplete and will not be repeated here (blame the server outting a few days ago)

However, there has been progress to report.

IJN and IJA have reported that their landings on the Philippines have been successful and a beachhead at both Aparri and Vigan have been established. There some early fears during the Vigan landings as it was discovered that US submarines were attempting to use the chaotic naval landing to attempt to hit our landing ships. However, escorts report that there was no damage done and at least one US submarine was severely damaged due to oil in the water.

During the landings A6Ms from Formosa continued their sweeps over the Islands, and the US airbase at Clark Field. Flight Lt Nakajima stood out in todays reports, leading the flight and attack a large force of US P-40 'Warhawks'. Nakajima was later backed up with more of his Squadron and the final reports were 6 US losses and 1 A6M lost.

The final report from the Philippines for today is that the Yokosaka 1st SNLF completed a successful Paradrop ahead of the main landing at Aparri, helping clear the way fro our troops to move inland. Over the next few days the unit is expected to receive reinforcements and equipment.

Elsewhere the most significant news comes from the Campaigns in Malaya. Troops just like in the Philippines have established beachheads at Kota Bharu, our forces reported a high number of Allied causalistes much to the delight of High Command. Bombing Runs in the area have also been more successful, particularly over Alor Star.

Day 5 - 11th December 1941

The early reports from today's action seems to be mostly concerning the submarine forces of both sides. Our Submarine forces around Pearl Harbour reported that they have been picked up and attacked by American destroyers, however, no reports of any damage so far.

Meanwhile contact has been lost with a merchant ship in the China Sea, belief is that Submarines from the US navy are operating in that area, therefore ships will be sent to clear the area out. Another Patrol Boat reported possible American submarine off the coast of Indo-China and dropped depth charges, however, the effectiveness of the attack is uncertain.

Meanwhile, in China recon aircraft are reporting that Chinese forces throughout central China are planning several engagements on our positions this is bold, but we will keep an eye on the situation. Ichang was declared an open city, and our informants report the Chinese marching into the city. This was a tactical decision by High command, the presence of Chinese troops and the more defensive positions nearby meant that the city was not tactically relevant.

For those that want to watch the turn we have started a Youtube series

Day 6 - 12th December 1941

IJA reports that Tanks and other heavy equipment has finally reached the Philippines at San Fernando. These tanks will be the units that along with the brave Japanese soliders will bring about the defeat of the US forces on the Islands. They also report that more US fighters have been shot down over the skies of the Islands.

Yet this seems to go against the reports of the IJN who report that Sweeps and escort missions while successful did not clear the US airforces out completely and in fact a unit of G3Ms were tailed by a large group of enemy interceptors, luckily for the bombers little damage was done, but commanders in Takao have decided that until Air Superiority can be ensured then bombing runs will be used in more useful areas.

The IJN also reports mixed news on the sea. In the Yellow Sea, cargo ships moving resources from China to the Japanese mainland report loud knocking on the sides of the ships and one captian reported being fired upon by US submarines. The captian reported he fired back with the ships guns and soon the submarine was back under the water. It would seem an oversight by the IJA coastal defence forces have left the Yellow Sea open to US subs, this is matter that will be quickly resolved.

The other major news from the IJN is that 144th Infantry regiment was landed safely on Guam and by the end of the day the Rising sun was flying over the island. This is a signficant blow to the US morale and we will make sure that our English speaking radio stations broadcast this news for them all to hear. With victories like this the Emperor will soon be victorious.

In China, the boldness of the Chinese seems to know no bounds, the IJA forces report that Chinese units have crossed the reiver at Nanchang and are attempting to push us back from posistions. The IJN bombers that were bombing the Philippines have been re-directed to assist this units, and defeat this Chinese assault.

Consider using your Naval bombers as ASW and Naval Search for now. Don't waste their aircraft and pilots on land targets unless there are no air defenses and it is an emergency.

Also, set up a protected convoy routing system.

That does indeed sound like a good idea. I haven't been doing it too much and his subs are annoying me but not too much damage. I need to sort my escorts out to patrol the Luzon strait.

Day 7 - 13th December 1941

Major news comes from the landing forces at San Fernando. A group of US MTBs managed too get close to our ships as they offloaded their supplies. The ensuing chaos that was caused is a dark day for the IJN. Several ships were sunk. Fourtunately ships can be replaced (although this will take time) no troops were lost as they were already off the boats by the time the attack took place.

Elsewhere the new Airforces doctrines of bombing at 8,000ft seems effective, particularly in China with the massed Chinese troops. This plan will be very significant given the advances of the Chinese troops have pushed onto Nanchang. Our brave troops have been steeled in their defence and will blunt any attack, especially with the support from the IJAAF and IJNAF.

Elsewhere our forces in the north of China succeeded in their early advances before the attacks on the major cities of Loyang and Chengchow. With this early success morale will be high as the IJA pushes for the final victory in China.

If you want to capture Chungking, don't destroy the Chinese units. Just bottle them up where they can't get supplied. Destroy them after capturing Chungking and the other replacement city otherwise you will have them all at Chungking.

Day 8 - 14th Dec 1941.

Early reports have come in from both our sub captains and surprisingly our destroyer captains. Our submarine captains have reported that they have been targeting US destroyers near Pearl Harbor in absence of finding other targets of opportunity. Although, there has been no success from their reports, the good news the submarines have not been damaged by the counter attacks from the American Destroyers. The strangest thing from the early reports is our own destroyer captains have been reporting that they too have been seeing attacks from US submarines on themselves and have been hunting the attackers. Maybe the American enemy is not so different after all.

The fleet sent to hunt the US MTBs have reported that they did indeed spot them and open fire. However, rather disappointingly the final report is that the MTBs escaped from this contact. We cannot let this happen in the future. All amphibious invasions will be set with more powerful escorts in the future if they are the priority force.

Elsewhere our IJN bomber squadrons in Indochina and Formosa have received their new orders, they are to patrol the oceans looking for US submarines. We now from contacts with Patrol Boats and Destroyers that there are many in the ocean from Malaya to Japan and we need to make sure that they do not cause any issues in the future when we come to extract resources from the Southern Resource area.

The 6th Army reports it has arrived in its new Area of Operation, it will take a few more days to unload everything off the trains but morale is high that they will bring the crushing defeat of the Chinese forces.

Day 9 - 15th December 1941

News from the navy in Formosa suggests a small cargo ship has been struck and sunk by a submarine, give the increased amount of ASW air partols this is rather disappointing news. Increased naval ASW patrols have been ordered. Meanwhile our submarine captains report good news in their daily reports. Firstly, near Pearl Harbour continued pressure from our submarine captains are frustrating US captains. Yet elsewhere the news is even better. One of our submarines has engaged and hit a US sub off the coast of the Philippines. This is great news, and we thought it wouldn't be topped until we got news from the SW Pacific. One of our captains reports a US tanker has been hit with several torpedos and sunk. This is excellent news and long may it continue.

Elsewhere the IJMNS Ryujo reports that her B5N2 attack aircraft sunk several small cargo ships, while nothing spectacular, it is good live training for those pilots. They will continue their patrol and cover of the western flank as ships with troops head towards Davao.

In China more good news, bombing raids on Chinese Posistions in Nanchang report high success with ground observers confirming this report. In Nanyang brave imperial troops caused massive casaulities in their victory in the area.

Today has been a good day for the Empire.

Day 10 - 16th December 1942

More Allied submarine activity has been reported to high command, this time mostly off of the coast of Indochina. Today's reports include two transport ships, one large and one smaller. There was also a sunk Patrol Boat off the coast of Formosa which is extremely disappointing for the Imperial forces. Aircraft will continue to search the seas hoping to sink any subs they find, along with our sea patrols.

The Navy also reported that they had found the PT boat Squadron off the coast of the Philippines yet again, however, just as before due to low light levels at night they were unable to destroy these boats. Once again this is frustrating, but hopefully soon we can sink these ships.

Our Airforce bombing raids today have been somewhat effective according to reports. Nothing incredible but steady. A war is not won in one strike so we will continue to use the superior pilots of the Airforces to harrass and pummel the enemy into submission. This has also been a good day for the forces attacking Hong Kong, the large guns deployed to the area have done fantastic work. They have been ordered to bombard for 2 more days and then we will assault the British Forces with our infantry bringing victory to the emperor before the end of the year.
