Where is "Ocean" Terrain in the Editor?

Post by LeBlaque »

Bill, originally posted in Steam, thought I would do some follow-up here based on your comment.

Was looking to do some "revisions" with the Editor as I think there is some improvement opportunities regarding Naval Combat (particularly subs and Destroyers). However, on the Set Combat/Movement Penalties/Bonuses choice there is no "Ocean" terrain (but ports, sub pens, etc.). Moreover, there is no Destroyer in attack/defense penalties as a separate unit (though it is separated in other feature sets such as Naval Storm Damage). How do you get to "ocean" terrain to make adjustments? Anyway to abstract the Destroyer from Naval Group?

Hi

All the Terrain/Resource types are on land, so there is no option to have a Destroyer fare worse in open sea than another ship type apart from amending the Combat Target Data stats. Or bonuses due to (say) Naval Weapons and Naval Warfare research.

That said, all naval combat takes place either in open sea or when a unit is attacked in port, so I am not really sure what other meaningful options could be added to the Set Combat/Movement Penalties/Bonuses given that fighting in the open sea is the default?

Still "new" to the Editor but the thinking was that with an "Ocean" terrain you could, by illustration, give attack bonuses to Destroyers against subs, subs attack penalties against destroyers, sub bonus attacks vs Naval, Carriers defensive penalties against subs, etc. In sum, revising a rock-papers-scissors abstraction of current naval combat. Thus the added comment of Destroyers being independent of the Naval Group as opposed to included within. Thanks, Bill.
