Air Lift Supplies

Post by abulbulian »

It's been a while and I was wondering how the game currently handles supplies/freight delivered by air. A few scenarios..

a) AI sends air supplies to selected airbases - no Depot
Does this mean the supply will be taken by units/HQs with their internal transport? Based on proximity and priority?

b) AI sends air supplies to selected airbases - w/Depot
The depot trucks will be used to send out supplies based on proximity and priority? As well as the scenario below for units using their own trucks?

c) Manual delivery of supplies by air to non-airbase hexes.
50%(?) less supplies arrive and units/HQs near by will use their internal transport to pick it up? Based on proximity and priority?

I do know that is much more efficient to send supplies by air to hexes with air bases. This is what I try to do manually and pre plan my HQs to be in these airbases as they finishes their movement. This is more about the German Mot HQs in the sum/fall 41 (not considering 42 and onward here).

Any other insight into this would be appreciated.

Dead Manual, p.265f wrote:When air freight is air transported to a hex, if there is no depot in the hex, a temporary depot is created. Whether a temporary depot or an already existing depot receives the air transported freight, the instant an air transported shipment arrives in a hex, a special distribution takes place[s] of freight from the depot in the hex. This special distribution is of supplies, fuel and ammo only (no replacements) and goes to units in the hex or adjacent to the hex. If there is already freight in the depot, then some of this existing freight may be distributed out along with the freight that was dropped. It is much more efficient to transport freight to a hex with an air base unit than to a hex with no airfield. If there is no airfield, it is better to drop in clear than in worse terrain. Temporary and isolated depots are not allowed to convert freight into vehicles from the pool. They are not allowed to distribute replacements during the logistics phase, but can replenish units in the pocket with them during the logistics phase using standard non-vehicle methods as well as by using any vehicles already in the depot or vehicles requisitioned to the depot from units in the pocket. Temporary depots created under this routine remain until the hex is linked to a supply source, at which point the temporary depot is disbanded. Non-transport aircraft have their cargo capacity halved when performing air transport. In addition, It also costs one AP to assign a Level Bomber to an air transport mission (whether set to Single or Multiple Missions). Level bombers pay four times the normal miles flown when they fly air transport missions.
a) temp. Depot has never trucks in it, 1 Hex range means no Trucks used I guess.
b) 1 Hex range means no Trucks used I guess. (next Logistics Phase Trucks will be used as normal)
c) No Trucks I'd say. Not sure if the system bothers about Supply priorities of Units with this methods.

What is your reason ffor supplying HQs? Wouldnt it be better to supply directly to a division?

Foch : This is not peace. This is a 20 year armistice.

Yes. I found it better to deliver supplies to the units themselves (and not the HQ).

You can see an immediate impact on their supply/ammo levels, as well as an increase in the CV (if levels were previously low).

Just move the needy units to within one hex of an airbase for most efficient supply delivery.

Regarding the JU52s, be aware of how the added fuel tanks consume the stockpile of freight (from the originating airbase) that you are trying to deliver. If you don't need the added range, I would unequip the extra fuel tank load-plan. Otherwise you may end up consuming a lot of the stockpiled freight by the JU52s themselves.
