Post by bigus »

Here is the start of my map mod for CS Vietnam.
Similar to my WDS mods. Use JSGME to enable.

Really like this mod. It's super clean and easy to read the 2D map. Thanks!

Your welcome. As with all my mods, I update every so often so check back.
Next up I think will be the isometric (3D) jungle and forest trees. Also the annoying pixels bleeding through for the hex side edges.

Cheers,

Great job, bigus! FYI: As of the imminent official 1.31 / 2.31, there will be ten slope rows for the max of 50 elevations our game maps allows for. They change per five elevations. While those were added, row order was changed so that slopes begin from row 4, with Cliffs, Escarpments and Embankments now one row earlier each.

My 2 cents on this but I've been trying to line up and match the 3D river hexes to the streams and minor rivers.
This has been near impossible to do. I am NOT a big fan of the isometric rivers in this title.
I've figured out the 3D streams and minor rivers (from Rising Sun). Why the "rivers" couldn't be the same but retextured
is beyond me. It would have looked much better and the draw order the same. As it is, the draw order of the rivers looks awkward and scrappy.
Hopefully the team can revisit this?

The main difference is that there are a number of different waterway types included in Vietnam that Rising Sun doesn't have.

But yes, this is something that's wishlisted to get fixed.

Yes, but why not just retexture one file and name it "Rivers". You would then have streams, minor rivers and river hexes.
In my mod, I've made the major rivers full hexes and this seems to work well other than draw order in some scenarios.
I think this would make for a cleaner look.

Yes, waterways draw order has been on my to-do list, just hasn't gotten there yet. They made their introduction in Middle East 2.0, in preparation for Vietnam and Brown Water Navy, as units can't travel hex sides that the previous rivers were.

In Middle East, it is just the Suez Canal using the new Canal hexes, while in Vietnam mid-hex waterways are much more common.

Gotcha. Thanks for the explanation.
Also, I've revised the 2D slopes for the new update.

Thanks,

Version 1.5 posted. This is for the 2.0 Beta.

These are my thoughts on this beta and the graphics in general (purely my own). I'm not sure why we have to have multiple files (many, many files) to achieve the same result.
I'm sure you could have streamlined the graphics files. Do we really have to have Tropical, Sub Tropical and SE Asia files?
I get the Biomes and regions thing but I think that SE Asia is jungle terrain. Why not name all those files for Vietnam as SE Asia? Personally I think the added files for all these biomes add unnecessary overhead. Both in time to alter and/or change as well as overall game file size (I'm coming in at 2.3 gigs unzipped for 2D and 3D combined).

Southeast asia isn't all jungle terrain, surprisingly enough. There's quite a bit of diversity, which is especially important for scenarios that will be in Korea, Laos and Cambodia.

Even Vietnam has different tree type cover, some temperate, some very jungle-esque.

Personally I'm not sure if anyone will notice the difference for Laos and Cambodia. Jungle is jungle. Tree's are tree's.
For Korea, trees are tree's. I think it should be as simple as that. But that's just me.

I enjoy the diversity.

But I'm heavily biased, as I'm keenly interested in geography and cartography.

Mine layer and drone pilot. As a fellow Canadian your skills will be useful in the war to come.....
All kidding aside. I only want to know if it's tree's or jungle terrain on the map. I'm not sure what else matters.

The regions and biomes system if of particular interest for the 3D map images, where there are distinguishable differences on graphics from region to another, and between biomes. For 2D side of thing, it does not matter that much. I have tried to keep the number of 2D map files to minimum.

2D is fine and easy to work with. 3D is much harder with the sheer number of files for the different regions.
It's not impossible to change just tedious.
Love the new launch screen BTW.
