Public beta 0.76: rendering the screens weirdly
Public beta 0.76: rendering the screens weirdly
Trying to open design for rebuild: not so fast, earthman!
Check this out: Where is all the extra information? I cannot proceed with this!
I have not seen this behaviour before under any other version. Whatever changed with the look and feel stuff, something broke.
Can we have the old look and feel (and behaviour) back as an option please? I also don't really like any of the new ones anyway.
Charlie

PS I've tried this under all the available colour styles, none of them work even after a restart.
The game is not playable at this point. I cannot rebuild anything.
There's more. As I scroll down the available options for the ship, each line is coloured in.
Example: before
After:

And there's still more.
Opening screen after loading the current game: Note right panel information--not visible. Same problem as with the ship rebuild screen--except there doesn't seem to be any way to refresh that.
After I switch to map it redraws it with the missing info. Something is seriously amiss with this new graphics.

Re: Public beta 0.76: rendering the screens weirdly
I've reinstalled the game up to patch 59 which works fine.
All my save games are present except 9, which is showing the older Japan game I had before and not the Germany game I started with 0.76. This one is probably mangled so not going to attempt to load it.
Oh well...

Re: Public beta 0.76: rendering the screens weirdly
Those are some really weird UI glitches there. We haven't seen similar reports from other users. What OS are you running? You mentioned you reinstalled to 1.00.59. Is this a complete clean reinstall? Have you tried installing 1.00.76 over it?
Re: Public beta 0.76: rendering the screens weirdly
OK time to come clean on the operating platform, which is Playonlinux running on Ubuntu 20.
I don't use windoze, and until now I haven't had to. PoL runs the Wine emulation engine which is well-known and basically only adds some wrapper scripts to make it less fiddly to manage. I run half a dozen of my other fave games with it and have done for years, e.g. war in the east, HOI, AOD, Mechcommander 1 (but 2 does not work), Total Annihilation. These are all really old, but I think they're classics and I still like them. What's more they run seamlessly and actually faster than under windows on the same spec box.
The only thing that ever messes you up with emulators like this is graphics, I have found over the years.
If you can provide reasonably detailed information on what was done to change the graphics, it is quite possible I can hack Pol to work properly with it. Plainly there are different graphics libraries in play, and Wine can be extended with native libraries if these are required, a lot of the time. Sometimes it is only a missing dependency which is present in native windoze, but must be installed by hand otherwise. I have had to do this a couple of times in the past.
The point is, though, under 0.59 and every prior release I haven't had one single technical issue different to what everyone else has reported from time to time. This latest change now seems to do things very differently, and if I know what happened, praps I can fix it.
And I really don't care for any of the new colour schemes. The light ones are too light, and the dark ones too dark for my vision which is not the best, and I struggle with the contrast levels. The old scheme worked much better for me.
I am perfectly aware that this is an unsupported platform, and I am not asking you to support it. But if you can supply some information so I can maybe figure out the problem, that will do just fine.
In my environment anyway, AFAICT 0.76 uninstalled the older one and installed the new in its place. I reverted it by removing the whole thing, reinstalling the original unpatched version and then applying 0.59 update over that. All the saves were intact except slot 9 which I started off in 0.76 but had to abandon because of the problems seen.

Re: Public beta 0.76: rendering the screens weirdly
Thanks for the info.
We think the issue may be due to the Windows Themes used in this new version. Otherwise, we're not sure what would cause your emulation to break.

Re: Public beta 0.76: rendering the screens weirdly
That was an important clue.
I found some downloadable themes by checking a few wine sites (POL is just a frontend for wine) and after installing one of them, the rebuild screen is rendering satisfactorily.
It doesn't seem to matter WHICH of them I install (picked a thing called Zuna in the end) but in conjunction with the Light theme in RTW, it all works OK.
Still have the issue with older saves not being recognised except for two out the 9 this time.
And I still don't really care for any of the 4 new themes; if we could have the classic look back as an option in the release version of 0.76 that would be great as far as I'm concerned. I am finding the new themes harder on my vision than the old one (either too light or too dark) and leading to eye strain after a short time. Others may have the same problem.
It may interest you to know that in all other respects RTW works perfectly under wine/POL and has done from the start.

Re: Public beta 0.76: rendering the screens weirdly
Great to hear that things are working better for you.
Regarding the saves, I'm unaware of Linux's file and folder structure. Is there any possibility that the game isn't seeing your saves because they're placed in a different Documents folder?
On the UI modes, so far we've generally had positive feedback on the UI modes, however, we'll consider further UI improvements in the future.

Re: Public beta 0.76: rendering the screens weirdly
The wine emulation creates a virtual drive in a directory which is private to the application. Every application has its own location called 'drive_c', equivalent to C:\, with a partial but recognisable structure under it. Nothing is shared with other applications (in my case, games), so there are no side effects between them, and each virtual drive has its own private registry. Many default windows DLLs are included or emulated in wine, with the option to manually override them with a real DLL if you can lay your hands on it and if needed.
Theming support though, is rudimentary. It seems that what I've done by adding one to the RTW drive_c is 'fill in the blanks' where the emulation doesn't know what to do--which is possibly why it didn't matter which theme I applied.
The saves are in the RTW virtual drive under RTW/drive_c/users/cmeo/Documents/My Games/Rule the Waves 3/Save
Apart from the / going the other way, I'm pretty sure this is how things get laid out normally.
In any case, the location being right or not doesn't shed any light on why 0.76 only finds 2 or 3 out of nine--surely it should be all of them, if the location is right, and none of them if not.

Thanks for this actually, was having exactly the same problem but on Crossover. Also with the added joy of not being able to see the ship or turret lists (internal windows, not sure what they're actually called), just the category titles for the ships above. Will see if Zuna works. I have spent all afternoon on it, my god. I don't hate the new colour themes,I think my preferred is dark slate, because I tend to play quite late into the night, lights off.mrchuck wrote: Wed Feb 26, 2025 10:47 am The wine emulation creates a virtual drive in a directory which is private to the application. Re: Public beta 0.76: rendering the screens weirdly
No longer having the mrchunk's issue, but still not able to see any ships (on the main page) or the ships/possessions (on the map page), or missile launchers/gun turrets in the ship design screen. Actual graphic render of the ship in the design screen is fine, just the sections where you can edit the turrets/launchers themselves.
. It could also be that Crossover is messing me around, I don't have anything like the latest update, but it seems at least related to what happened above.- Attachments

Re: Public beta 0.76: rendering the screens weirdly
I am experiencing the same issue as MarineAres, where the ships in service and under construction are invisible. Fwiw this happens to me on 0.84 too.
Switching to Windows 8 fixed this for me

You're my new best friend, I hope you know that.
Been filling the void with Aurora 4 but that interest period for that is waning now.
