Silent Service issues: what are they?

Post by Aarfy »

Hello,
I have just, by pure chance, encountered a negative review of C:MO and from it I learned that the Silent Service has been pulled from sales due to scenarios being broken by recent updates. Developer posts on Steam forums confirmed this, with some ideas about how it might or might not get resolved.

I happen to own Silent Serivce purchased a few months back and as it happens, started playing it just two days ago, totally unaware. I have been progressing well, although not sure whether due to my skill or bugs now. So here is my question.

What is actually broken? Are all scenarios sub-par now, are they just too hard/too easy, is something totally non-playable or...? I'm not particularly impressed with the product I paid for being broken due to updates, but here I really don't want to even start that storm. I would just ask for a clear information what in the product works and what does not, so I can still retrieve some value from it, and not waste my time in the process.

I really do believe that this much is owed to the people who paid for it.

Maybe it is because the changes in the minimum ranges of ballistic missiles. In the first mission i think that the submarine cannot fire on the target due to being to close when in the launch zone

Thanks for the reply. I do not think it is that though. First, I completed the mission without any problems, so unless the update in question was during something like 24 hours between I played it and the annoucement, it's not it.

Secondly, the annoucement on Steam forum specifically referred to updates in how sonar is working.

There seems to be quite a bit of flak over on steam - but I haven't been able to see details of the issues.

Because there is no detail. I'm the one who has been asking for some specifics. Suddenly some of the loudest voices have either gone silent or trying to divert the conversation. I'm not saying there aren't any issues with Silent Service, but I suspect some of the people complaining have never played it.

I am pretty sure that is none of the reasons. Just tried it and it worked.

I have replayed the first eight scenarios and have not seen any issues that I consider game-breaking. I was able to complete all eight. I did also find out I still suck at sub ops.

Some developer clarification the DLC's issues would be nice.

Yes, the devs should make an official statement on the (temporary) removal on The Silent Service from sale for everyone to refer to.

As for the issues themselves, I believe I remember one of the devs saying in the Steam discussions that the advances/improvements in the Sonar model actually ended up making at least some of the scenarios too difficult the way they were built.

"Too difficult" to me does not equal broken. Are they too difficult because the victory conditions are too hard, due to the platforms and sonar/sound models now being more realistic? That's ok for me. I'll play them and see what I can do. I'm not all about winning, but in gaining understanding and testing things.

YMMV of course.

By "difficult" I meant that the improved Sonar could make the existing scenario structure almost assured failure, like with Chicken Kiev.

If anyone could try the 2.1 submarine tutorial, it seems to have become more difficult (to use the term some of you use), which is a shame for a tutorial scenario.
The messages still refer to CMANO, from CZ to 25nm, whereas they are now spaced 34nm apart... .

Does that show up in Silent Service?
