Is in better to mine a resource or to colonize?

Is in better to mine a resource or to colonize?

I noticed that when I colonized a planet that I was previously mining with a mining station, that the estimated production of that resource would drop, not increase. Does anyone know the mechanics on whether its better to I use mining stations or to colonize?

i would guess that placing millions of people on a planet would have bigger mining rate than a few houndred in a space station controlling drones.

Could it be a luxury resource that would be consumed by the planet directly thus resulting to a lower output ? Even if you mine more of it.

Personally I'd always colonise a world if it has high suitability and a decent diameter. Even if the world has the best luxury resources you'll still get those from the colony. It'll just take time before the amount you can mine takes over a mining station's mining rate.

Ship construction speed is based on population, I would guess a lot of other things, like mining rate, is as well. So your 30m colonists will not be as much as a dedicated mining post.

I think it all depends on whether money is important to you at the time. If it is then you 100% want to colonise a planet instead of building a mining station there. At least the mining amount from the colony will improve as it develops.
