thinking of making my own wargame now

Post by theswitch »

yea this game seems to have awoken me in some strange way (go to the questions thread)

I do have some experence with macromedia director so it occured to me to see if there was any shockwave game developer communitys, now I'm not a super programmer but I'd say I'm above average

anyway I came across somthing I had never heard about before, a free program that lets you make computer games based on a visual drag and drop method of programming, just downloaded it last night, I'll have to see if its worth my time though

so this started getting me thinking of what kind of wargame I would like to design. . .. hmmmm

I started to have this weird idea of a wargame that was based around thoughts, feelings, ideoligys, and all sorts of stuff in our own heads, so I slept on it a bit and started wondering if I could make a wargame that was'nt so much about these little guys killing eachother and more about some kind of conflict of . .. . . . well I'm not sure yet but I want to make a game that is based on meditation rather than beating the other guy it would be based around experementation, exploration and the soul but still keeping it a game . . . . .somehow

if anyone is still reading this, no I'm not a wacko, just sharing my artistic side or somthing?

if anyone wants to know this program that I found than just post here, I'm not sure If I should throw the link into this forum though

I seem to have fallen in love with non historical wargames, this happened about a year ago, since then I'v been searching and searching for something to quench my thirst and over this time I keep getting slightly disapointed, I guess I want a game that as a player you could almost live in, kinda like warhammer or DnD (kinda a war game) but free.

oh by the way I want to make this game mainly as a real board game, but am really interested in what i could do with the computer (online)

perhaps this thread is off topic, but its because of this game that I have started to get excited about designing my own[&o][&o][&o]

Well I put off delving into the program I found for about a week but when I started to check it out WOW. it actuall works, what I mean is you actually can create all sorts of weird interactive stuff by using drag and drop icons and its actually EASY. I was amazed. the program is actually layed out and designed in such a way that its easy to pick up, forget macromedia director this this . . .this is huge, I can't belive I haven heard of it or found it till now.

awile back I was looking into that click and play stuff and a couple others like rpg maker and some others but this one actually works at making it non overwealming

now I'v only just been playing around with it for awile but probibly the thing you should know is the creator or one of the creators actually wants to use their program as an educational tool and can actually explain very well all the different things in the software though an included tutorial, I get the feeling it was made by teachers/programmers wich is unheard of but is what works in my book

now the limitations

I said before it was free, thats what I thought but actually it is, but if you want to create multiplayer games you have to register it (pay some money) and there are a couple other little things you get but mainly its free, just no mp functionality untill you reg it

the other main limitation is well. . . . the software is based around 2d games, BUT it can do 3D and has examples but I don't need that, I want to make a war game, theres also a dice icon so I don't have to program a random thingy

the other thing is it has a built in code for each game wich you can edit/create and the help section seems to cover all of the coding belive it or not

so I'm excited

I'm still gonna buy supremacy but I'v never bought somthing off the web before hmmmmm

oh yea

you can downlaod this software from their site (theres no spyware and all that crap)

here is the link

http://www.gamemaker.nl/index.html

and theres a big game dev community with lots of game already made at these sites

http://gmshow.gm-school.com/

http://www.gamemakergames.com/

and heres the official forum wich I havent even looked through yet but has lots of threads

http://forums.gamemaker.nl/

there, now I'll let you play, and if you have your own idea for somthing to build tell me about it, I'll be happy to listen

Thanks for posting this theswitch. This looks like a great prototyping tool to get some game ideas playable quickly as well as a great way for people with little or no programming experience to make some little games.

Good luck theswitch. Let us know how that works out for you. :)

In the mean time, I should note that we just gave the revised gold of Supremacy to Matrix today (or it may be transferred tomorrow morning). So it's just a matter of time.

Excellent new Praetorblue! Can you provide us with an industry perspective of the gold to release time when working with a publisher that uses electronic distribution?

Does Matrix hold off on release until physical copies are ready as well?

Thanks again,

It's my understanding that it will be 1-2 weeks from when we release the final gold (which should be the one we delivered last night/this morning). As long as there are no other monkey wrenches, it should be soon.

yea havent felt this good since I used to play with lego, I'v been doing all kinds of exprementation and its been fun, the great thing is there are people on their forums who are interested in working together on a project wich is cool.

yea I still want to make a war game but Iv been thinking about it for awile now and I'm probibly going to do a series of different one cause I got tons of ideas

and yea I agree that this could be a greate way to demonstate new ideas for a commercial game or even a collaborative work through open sorce project like on sorceforge.net

perhaps I may soon find a way to host some experements on the web, with this software you can make stand alone executables so its simple to run

actually I should also say somthing else, there are a couple of game projects on the forums that are wargames too, one is even a galactic wargame, I havent downloaded the latest verson of it yet, theres also some work being done on a tactics like game (you know final fantasy tactics etc) and the graphics look just like a console game wich is good for those console fans but I'm more into innovative unige stuff.

people create tutorials with pictures and software examples on the forums so its easy to learn

more info later. . .

still having fun, its like a puzzle game in itself using this software but its a fun kind of puzzling. yea kinda got stuck on some code on how to make characters move to only certain hexes/squairs so I'v started makeing a topdown version of another kind of game, an elite/freelancer type of game. its alot easyer to do this and I'll learn how to similar funtions.

I'm still waiting for supremacy by the way.

waiting. . . .. . .. . .. . . .. (thinking). . .. . . ..

waiting. . .. . . .. .waiting. . .. . . . .. . . .. . . .. .. . . .. . . .. . . . .. waiting. . .. . .. .. . . .????????????????????????
