Custom Resolutions
When I attempt to set the resolution by shortcut, I get an error saying that my computer cannot use this resolution.
For example, when I set my desktop to 1152x864 and then try the shortcut, I get the error. My monitor is quite capable of such a display.
Even 1200x900 does not work.
Do I have to stick with standard resolutions, like 1024x768 or 1280x1024?
Thanks,
Alanb

RE: Custom Resolutions
Alanb,
By shortcut do you mean the method described on page 51 of the manual?
If so, then ist should work. I certainly used to use the 1152 x 864 setting on the monitor I had previously. The only caveat is that your monitor must be able to support this res. To confirm that try setting it to those specs using the standard Windows desktop settings. If it works there, it should be fine to use in the game. Get back to me and let me know how you get on.

RE: Custom Resolutions
Yes, that's the shortcut as described on page 51.
I am using 1152x864 on my desktop, so I know my monitor is capable (ViewSonic VX910). I tried 1200x900, which my monitor can display, but I get an error when I try it with the shotcut.
No big deal either way. It's only that seeing that 1280x1024, my monitor's maximum, is too small for the game; and 1024x768 is a bit too big, I thought somewhere in the middle might be nice.
Thanks for the quick reply,
Alanb

RE: Custom Resolutions
From a quick reply to a rather slow one-- interesting. Everyone must be on vacation.
The resolution problem still stands. I should add that I have created the resolution 1152x864. The resolution was not there by default. I'm not sure that would matter, but it might. No matter, though, my screen can still display 1152x864, and according to the game documentation so should the game.
My machine uses XP and a nVidia 5700 video card. I am updated.
Thanks,
Alanb

I'm not Alan, I tried, but couldn't recreate your problem. As you probably know the combination of video card, operating system and driver version can sometimes wreak havoc on a feature that works on every other system but yours. We'll try to test COTA on as much systems as possible, but there are simply too many combinations/permutations to test them all.

RE: Custom Resolutions
Here are some screens. First of my screen resolution:

Here is the HTTR short cut:

And then, finally, here is the error message I get after starting the short cut:

RE: Custom Resolutions
Hi,
Just checked it again setting -resolution 1152x768 even works when your screen setting is set to something different.
As I said - sometimes it defies logic

RE: Custom Resolutions
Yeah, it something but it's not that important to spend a lot of time figuring out.
I'll just keep things at 1024x768. A resolution of 1280x1024 works also, as does 800x600. All three are standard resolutions. In other games and things I have no problem going to other resolutions, just nothing about 1280x1024, which is my monitor's limit.

Sorry Alan, I must be going blind. I check this forum at least twice a day and yet I just plain missed your subsequent posts till this morning. ( Too much work and no play, I reckon.[;)] )
I take it you're launching the Game by selecting the shortcut from the Start menu?
As Eddy says, because we cannot replicate the problem here, this is going to be exceedingly difficult to pin point without being at your machine. I suspect it's something to do with your graphics card or monitor settings. If I were at your machine I would experiment by changing these to see if there was a combination that did work. That is about all I can suggest at this stage.

RE: Custom Resolutions
Just so we can get this clarified in case you guys want to check this, let me explain what I think is going on.
First, I do not run any kind of strange configuration per se. I the minimum running in the background, needed for Windows. I hardly ever have any problems with any programs. My video drivers are updated and all the rest.
But here is what I am doing differently, which might be the cause of the problem.

Because the only resolution that were showing in my settings were the standard resolutions of 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x1024, if I wanted any in-between resolutions, I had to add them myself. The above pic shows how that is done.
This next pic shows what exactly is doing the scaling with particular resolutions:

In the case of these in-between resolutions, the display adapter is doing the scaling. With the standard resolutions, the monitor is doing the scaling. It would seem, then, that with HTTR, if the adapter is doing the scaling, adding an adapter-scaling resolution to the short cut in HTTR would not work.
I've tried to select monitor scaling with these in-between resolutions, but the selection always reverts back to adapter once I apply the new setting.
But then again this doesn't play out when I set the scaling to adapter and set the resolution to 1024x768.
It's only when I add resolutions, and I'm not certain that scaling has anything to do with it.
Still, to test this you could try, if you wanted, to set your screen resolution to something in between, like a 1200x900. This resolution would have to be added, like I've shown in the pics. This is easily done with the latest nVidia Forceware drivers.
Again, I'm not so sure this is that big a deal, but I think you could replicate my situation if you wanted.
BTW, in other games I am able to set the in-game resolutions to these in-between settings, the one's I've added.
Thanks,
Alanb

RE: Custom Resolutions
You are using an LCD/TFT screen I see. These only have a few defined settings. Anything beyond that requires the graphiocs card to manipulate things. Unfortunately we do not draw our graphics using the graphics card and that is the probably why it won't work on your setup.

RE: Custom Resolutions
i can get 1280x800 using the shortcut method described in the manual
its not a standard 4:3 ratio resolution because its a widescreen laptop display (with ATI X200M graphics)
HTTR look great and works fine

RE: Custom Resolutions
Use httr.exe instead of start.exe. example below, obviously your drive and path might be different.
"G:\Matrix Games\Highway to the Reich\HTTR.exe" /resolution 1280x1024
"G:\Matrix Games\Highway to the Reich\HTTR.exe" /resolution 1280x1024
