The way as we want to fight is to restrict the most gamey aspect of the game to keep the means at our disposal historical. So we have to choose options like the commanders of the World War II.
Of course, the strategy used will be different from History. I want to let Esteban a decent chance to win [;)]

The options choosen is :

The houses rules ares the following
Turn1 rules :
1. Each side can only give orders to ships that are not in port on turn one
2. Allies cannot give orders to any ground or air units except for China Command units on turn one. Allies can give any construction or HQ change orders he desires to any of his bases on turn one.
3. Japanese can only make turn one landings at allied bases that are within 15 hexes of a Japanese base Exception: the Japanese may always invade Wake on turn one.
4. Japanese are limited to one port attack on turn one. This attack may be at any port that can be reached by Japanese aircraft.
5. Japanese carriers must end movement within 5 hexes of an allied or Japanese base hex on turn one
6. The Japanese may not sail past Singapore to the north on turn 1 (no landing at Johore to cut Singapore off from the rest of Malaya on turn 1)

Time Limited rules :
7. No Allied skip bombing (100 ft. altitude naval attacks with level bombers) until 1/1/1943
8. No air missions except for transfer to base/ship can be flown off of carriers by carrier-capable air units until 1/1/1944. Carrier-trained units may fly any missions that are available to them.

rules :
9. No night bombing attacks allowed
10. No invasions or recon raids using submarine transport missions. Sub transport is for supplies and evacuation.
11. CV airgroups may not leave their ship except to base on the airfield that the CV is docked at if the CV is crippled by damage. Airgroups may be recovered and based anywhere if their home carrier is sunk.
12. Kwangtung Area Army units cannot leave Manchuria or the Soviet Union without changing HQ first.
13. No 4-engine bomber missions (against either land or naval targets) below 5000 feet
14. Japanese "light" sentais cannot be upgraded to Sallys, Helens or Peggys. Light Sentais must remain dive bombers, Lilys or fighter-bombers.
15. Allied bomber units may upgrade to any 4 enginge bomber, if those units either are or divide into 12 aircraft groups. The 16 aircraft allied bomber groups may only upgrade to a 2 engine bomber at the most.

My strategy until march 1942 is simple: retreat the slowest as possible to keep the Japanese before I can couter attack.
I'll deny extra point for lost causes (SRA,Philipines,...) by evacuating all the engineer units from it. I'll let the Infantery units as they have to die like men.
I make an exception for China my first objective is to take Nanning and Pakhoi in South.
In the North I'll go to the less japanese defended city and try to put pressure on it or even take it.

My opponent will read this thread. However feel free to post any questions, i'll answer it on thread or by PM if I considered that is top secret information.
It is my first AAR so make any remarks on presentation or tell me if you see any house rules that should be added to our already impressive list

Hi everyone:

I am the other party in Francois PBEM game here, and I just thought that I would pop in to give my take on what is happening so far.

My first turn move was to go after Manila instead of PH. The reasons why are the usual ones cited--fewer air casualties, remove the threat of his subs to my SRA invasion and reduce my economic losses from submarines later in the game, disrupt his plans for the evacuation of oil, resources and men from the SRA. On the whole, this went very well. My first strike on Manila sunk what I view as an amazing number of his submarines-23 out of 27 at the base sunk on Dec. 7. My follow-up strike with landbased bombers from Formosa on Dec. 8 sank another sub and 8 other ships, and showed that Manila was now completely unusable as a naval base. KB then split into two parts and managed to track down nearly all the shipping that started the game in the southern and central Phillipines, Tarakan and Balikpapan. As a bonus, Francois moved forward some of his Dutch naval units from Java, and they got shot to pieces as well.

I also retargeted the naval landing troops at Palau to go to Cagayan. Though I couldn't destroy the B-17 group there completely, now that it is very hard to fully close decent sized or large airfields, I was able to largely destroy most of the unit on the ground when Cagayan fell. As a bonus my bombarding forces bagged the couple AKs that start at Cagayan, and I got a size 4 airfield that I immediately moved my Nells into, just to further seal off Luzon from the rest of the SRA. This is kind of a standard turn one move for me. Killing off as much of the Allied LBA as possible is a big priority for me.

I won't comment on my war strategy really, as we are still at the start of the game, and I don't need to give pointers to Francois

So far, here is what is going right:

1. American subs in Manila were almost entirely destroyed. The 2-3 subs that that weren't sunk outright are going to be sitting in repair yards in the U.S. and won't be back in action for several months at least.

2. Very few transport casualties so far. The Dutch subs and the few S-boats that are still around have not done very much. I have lost one loaded small AP so far, but thats it. My aerial reconnaisance shows that most of his boats are busy evacuating cadres from isolated Allied units. Thats annoying, and it will probably come back to haunt me later on, but I don't have 40-50 spare DDs lying around to form into ASW TFs to track these guys down, so I guess I will have to let him do his thing while I work on my advance through the SRA.

3. SRA progress is good. My advance through the SRA is working well for the moment. I am a day or two behind schedule here and there, because I am forgetting to create/load the occasional transport TF, but so far his bases have been falling on schedule and in most cases, with very little damage to the key economic targets. For example, the Brunei oil field was 10% damaged, Miri, Tavoy and Alor Star were barely damaged, the resource centers in Luzon have been taken with less than 10% damage total. Tarakan fell this past turn (which Francois has not posted yet) and it was entirely intact. Only Hong Kong was badly damaged in the takeover, which struck me as odd considering the disruption my air strikes and extended combat put on his defenders, and evacuation of much of his base force engineers via the DDs in port on turn one. Let's hope that my luck in this area continues to hold

Key non-economic targets like Kuching and Singkwang have been grabbed or are being grabbed as I write, so his access to Malaya and Palembang is cut off, and soon I will be able to control the waters around Java as well.

4. My submarines have just gone nuts. I don't know what those guys are drinking, but I want a bottle of whatever it is. It's not just the decimation of his fleeing damaged ships from the Phillipines, which are slow, easy targets, but also his ships that were undamaged in the attacks on Manila and targets in the waters around Java. Maybe 4 undamaged AKs and APs, with a couple undamaged MSWs tried to run from Manila along the west coast of Borneo to Java, carrying the PAF base force. I had 3-4 subs in the area, and they bagged EVERYTHING except for one lonely MSW! That's pretty amazing. Some of the PAF base force made it ashore in at Kuching after their transport was damaged, but most of what's left of that remnant has been destroyed or trapped in the capture of Kuching. Francois probably got out a tiny cadre using his Lodestars or a sub, but still, you have to be pleased that 90%+ of the unit that embarked in Manila will have to be rebuilt by the time it is all over.

5. Very high Allied naval losses in the SRA. Almost nothing got out of the Phillipines or Borneo, except as floating wreckage. Two allied attempts to raid my invasion TFs have been turned back by my torpedo bombers without even getting to a target. Even the Dutch and American PT boat squadrons in the SRA have been entirely destroyed. Right now, I can see on my intelligence reports that 115+ Allied ships have been sunk--a number that I am hoping doesn't reflect a couple Allied DDs and CLs. Most of this stuff is not a big loss to the Allies--AKs in particular. Still, I am pleased that so much shipping has been destroyed.

Reasons for concern:

1. The Chinese are on the rampage. I had not played a PBEM game in the last 8-9 months, and while I knew that the Chinese had been improved, I thought this was mostly just that they had 100% preparation for their starting cities. Well, besides the nearly indefensible base at Pakhoi, the Chinese have taken Kaifeng and this past turn Hsinyang. They are threatening Hanoi, but I moved reinforcements in there, so I might be able to hold that. I didn't appreciate the effect of the changes to the Chinese, so I will have to recover in this area. So far at least, nothing that is really valuable has been lost.

2. Air losses. My operations losses are really high for some reason, even though I am flying my units with below 10-20 fatigue in most cases, and off of good-sized airfields with little or no runway damage. Right now the Allied/Japanese "kill rate" is 1.8-1, which definitely favors the Allies. Mostly this is because I am losing 5-6 planes a turn to operations losses. I will have to find a way through this somehow. I am not sure what more I can do than to not ask my guys to fly missions when they are tired.

3. Francois' Malaya evacuation stampede. So, I land troops at Songkhia, start building up for the push into Malaya, and all of a sudden 100+ Allied ships come sailing down the Macassar straight, to pull out as much of the Malaya army as can be grabbed. This wouldn't have been so bad, but it happened at the same time as a run of about 5 turns of rain and thunderstorms. So half or more of my air missions from Songkhia and Bangkok didn't fly. Well, the result was that his shipping got away to India pretty cleanly, carrying perhaps 15-20 units from Malaya with them. I probably couldn't have stopped the evacuation anyway, considering the number of ships thrown into the TFs, but I only managed to sink 5-6 AKs/APs, 2 cruisers and a MSW out of the whole force, along with parts of a couple of his units and damage to maybe another 6 ships. If I am lucky, another cruiser or two will show up on the sunk list later on. Despite the naval losses, this was probably a significant victory for Francois.

For your concerns Esteban, I mostly agree.
1/ The Chinese are now incredibly strong at start. If
I'm sure that I can storm Canton and took over Hong Kong from Japanese but as japanese, i'll find this move very gamey so I'll not do it.
Pakhoi and Nanning are nothing but lost cause. In North China, taking Kaifeng is also easy 2 japaneses Divisions is not enough to hold this city.
I think this have to be tweak in the next release, the starting situation is now really too ahistorical.

2/ The high operation loss of Japan is a great concern nearly 100 planes are now been lost in operation and they are not helpless newbies !

3/ For the escape from Malaya, I was not lucky with weather, I waited for bad weather before doing it. Letting the japanese destroy the engineers and HQ units is really giving VP for nothing.
