Woa, another version? Improved AI? Is Terry thinking about SPWaW or is there really going to be an AI improved v3.0 of WiR?

We have already made some major AI changes to the WiR game. In v2.0. There will also be AI changes in v3.0 of SPWaW

I love this game. Played the earlier version to death and even though I have not had a chance to play v2.0 yet, I know it will be top class!! Having had a quick look at the improvements file it seems the game will be even better than ever!
Good work Gary and Matrix games. Keep up the good work.

Sounds like you didn't get the whole download. The WiRComplete20.exe size is 4,044 KB on my machine.

The download went flawlessly on my machine, David. Many thanks for a wonderful product!

David: First let me say thanks for the free "mega patch" to WIR - this game was always one of my favorites and I am sure I will enjoy many more hours with it now.

I have noticed something funny though that I that I thought you'd want to know about. I have played two games as the Germans against the Soviet AI. Both times my Afrika front collapsed before I even reached August '41. Both times I significantly strengthened this HQ with land and air units and bumped up the replacement level to 85%. I know the update documentation said that this routine was tweaked to make it nearly impossible for the Afrika front to collapse in '41 unless the Axis player practically withdrew all his assets (certainly not the case in my game).

Could I be doing something dumb to cause this?

in respone to your original question david i love it ! .. I havnt played in years and had forgotten how bad the graphice were Image .. but that dosn't count .. its the game play that matters.

Re dumb AI .. i have noticed a definate improvement in the AI. as germans i am finding it tougher going in 41 by a long way.

RE chris .. i put the 3 utalian divs near trieste into the african fron and its now mid sept with effect there at all. maybe you got unlucky or put so much in that the readiness was pants.

I am getting the odd out of memory error when trying to change tank types, buts its erratic and not a real problem. if anyone has any suggestions on how to free up more memory i'd appreciate it. ( already killed off most background applications)

and well done again to matrix games !

I cannot get any sound, so I'm wondering what sounds should I be hearing?

I've not played this game before but looks mighty interesting.

Who needs sound? As far as I know this game has never had any sound and if it did I would only turn it off!

great games remain great games, even with a Dos interface and without sounds, animations.

About the turn structure: I like as always the plotted move because it hinders most of the gamey tactics. Howewer I think it 's totally unrealistic as implemented: player is unable to alter orders during the combat phase. I don't think putting him in a " order then pray" attitude simulates welleither the issue of new orders or the initiative of corps commanders. Moreover, the total passivity of the opponent during enemy turn is a real limitation too.

A wego system would solve the second problem but not the first. Maybe it should be possible in a future game to cut the turn in several plotted impulses shifting from one player to his opponent. The player with initiative would get the first impulse then a good chance to play immediatly the second. The second player would then get one or 2 impulses depending of his initiative level. Then the first player would get one or two impulses. But the second player would get yet belonging to initiative level 0, 1 or 2 impulses to end the turn. last the first player would complete his turn.

It could be interesting too to try a wego system with turn duration different for players belong to initiative level: one player would get more impulses when his oppenent would get less.

Anyway, a great game by a promising company. Can't wait for WON

Rob - Thanks I'll take a look at how much I am rotating into that HQ - In my last game, I only transferred three German infantry divisions in, and one air unit. Does not seem like that much with Rommel in command with an '8' rating. But who knows...I'd Be interested to know if anybody else has seen this.

David:

WiR was a quick download, and it installed flawlessly on Win'98 Image.

The graphics are retro - but it is a game that has all of the Grigsby trade-marks: depth, scope and game-play.

I started playing today - and it looks like there is a lot to learn to play this game well. Fellow gamers: any good strategies to pass along to other players?

Well done everyone.

Maybe in a future patch we might see improved graphics or unit icons? Or maybe even real black and white photos of the military equipment in the pop-up menus?

i've been playing as germans and have got to mid/late october. having a great time then .. hmm tell me what you think.

romped the ukraine .. was next to stalingrad and had a panzer corp scooping up the caucus oil. however i'd stalled in the north and center .. hadn't even reached smolensk and i'm still in the baltic states Image .

than out of the blue i was getting replacements consisting of tigers.pz3j's, nashorns and late model marders ?? eh ?. it looked like the new units coming into OKW and OKH were cadre formatins for new equipment, then it started seeping into my tank corps with 15 pz3j's instead of 100 pz3 h's. as i have a wee memory problem ( the computer thet is ) and cant change the tank types around .. ouch ! Then ( it gets worse ) BLIZZARD !! eek .. i know its supposed to be a 2% attrition rate but when i moved a pz corp 2 squares every tank/gun/flak died ! . This didnt seem to happen with plotted movement. Anyway ,, i continues ,, ahem in the same turn the russkies attacked ( not unsuprisingly ) but they had not insignificant numbers of su85,su76 and even some jsu122 ( i think ).

forgive me if i'm wrong, but these ( along with tigers and nashorns ) really shouldn't be around in late 41.

has anyone else experienced this at all ? if so is it correct ( its so long since i played the original i can't remember ).

anyway its still a good game .. i just need to get a bit more acclimatised Image
