The usual bombings of Manila, Bandoeng, Sitang - Manila being on that list for the last time, the base finally fell this turn after six months of siege. Last remaining base in the PI under Allied control is Cebu.

CBI:
The Flying Tigers and British Hurricanes swept Akyab and encountered Oscars on CAP - 4 Ki-43-Ic downed against one P-40. After the sweeps, 2Es hit Akyab and caused minimum damage to the RTA Cavalry Division. Escorts traded one P-40for one Oscar. On the ground, our advance force has reached Akyab. Betties with Zero escort bombed them promptly, but causing no damage.

Western Australia:
Betties with Zero escort tried another attack on the Aussie tanks advancing on Exmouth, this time meeting Kittyhawks on LRCAP. One Zero and one Betty downed for no losses.

Northern Australia:

SWPac:
Night attacks on Horn Island airbase by a B-26 squadron destroyed two Zeros on the ground.
Another night attack by another B-26 squadron on Port Moresby encountered Ki-45s on CAP - no losses, no damage caused either.
During daylight, P-39s and P-400 from Coen (the P-40s rotated back to Cooktown for a rest) swept Horn Island, trading 2 P-400 and one P-39 for 3 Zeros.

USS Lexington and DD escorts due for upgrades have reached Mare Island. Fixing the torpedo damage on Lady Lex plus her scheduled upgrades will keep her for 74 days in the repair yard.

Intel:
With the fall of Manila, 4 IJA divisions will be available shortly for operations elsewhere. With Allied forces "front-loaded" and arrayed for counteroffensives in Burma, Western Australia and the Horn Island / PM area, the worst that may happen would be an invasion in the lightly held rear areas - Ceylon or Calcutta, Perth, or south of Townsville for example. I hope intel will provide some warning.

At least Canada seems to be safe from invasion - with all those units scheduled to withdraw out of theater parked "out of the way":

CBI:
Dutch DD Isaac Sweers bombarded Akyab once again, quite nicely this time. Hurricanes and Warhawks swept Akyab, no resistance encountered. Bombers followed to bomb the RTA Cavalry Division in multiple waves, but caused only 35 casualties. British ground forces arrived and bombardment has confirmed that only a few enemy cavalrymen are present.
Wellingtons night-bombing Magwe got deflected by Nicks and Oscars on CAP.
In China, Japanese troops capture the coastal city of Pakhoi.

Western Australia:
British SAG (2 CA, 3 CL, 7 DD) operating near Geralton escaped an attack by I-164.

Northern Australia:
Tennant Creek airbase now at level 3, supply flow has improved but a far cry from what is required for an overland campaign against Darwin.

SWPac:
A small US bombardment force (CL Marblehead, 4 DD, DMS) heading from Townsville to Horn Islands and back had to run a gauntlet of sub, I-170 near Cairns, RO-61 near Cooktown twice on, the way out and back. Several TFS of 4 APDs each on Fast Transport duty running supplies to Portland Roads also ran into these subs. Question of time before a torpedo connects.

CBI:
DD Isaac Sweers once again makes the short run from Calcutta to bombard Akyab, just before the base was recaptured. Blenheims bombed the fleeing enemy ground forces in a neighboring hex, discovering elements of the 33rd IJA division.

Western Australia:
Beauforts bombing Japanese ground forces at Exmouth have been intercepted by Rufes, losing one. Kittyhawks escorting a follow-on strike of Wirraways downed one Rufe but lost a Kittyhawk and three Wirraways. Betties with Zero escorts bombed our ground forces which have arrived at Exmouth, causing 127 casualties and destroying 2 tanks.

CBI:
Shoddy staff work failed to give new orders to the Blenheim groups after the fall of Akyab. Local commanders sent them to bomb enemy ground forces near Akyab - which have been covered by Oscars. 2 Blenheims lost.

Western Australia:
The British cruiser TF bombarded Exmouth, then encountered and damaged I-164 on the way back to Perth. Betties with Zero escort again bombed Aussie ground forces at Exmouth, trading a Zero for a Kittyhawk and inflicting 92 casualties. Our ground forces have supply issues, a small xAKL has been ordered to land supplies near Exmouth.

Horn Islands bombed by an entire Marauder group, causing heavy damage to the airfield.
As feared, the large USN bombardment group on its way to Horn Island did attract Netties - and the LRCAP provided from Coen was not enough - BB Colorado suffered a torpedo hit, but shrugged it of with superficial damage.
An APD running supplies to Portland Roads - which has reached airbase and port size 1 - was sunk by a Japanese sub near Cooktown.
Ground troops are gathering at Cooktown for use against Horn Island, but Portland Roads need a bigger airbase before we can launch the operation.

SoPac:
B-17s bombing Efate have been intercepted by Ki-45s, suffering a number of damaged bombers.
CL Trenton bombarded Efate, CL Raleigh bombarded Tanna.
I have lots of troops in the Fidjis - 2 Marine divisions, several US Army regiments, three Kiwi brigades plus lots of support - prepping for Noumea, Tanna, Efate, Luganville, Funafuti. With KB intact, I will probably have to wait for all six prewar US carriers to become available again after repairs/upgrades - which will be in 72 days plus travel time from CONUS to Fidji.

CBI:
With several IJA divisions now available after the fall of Manila, it is important to occupy them with defensive duty instead of seeing them debarking in Australia or the SoPac Islands. The idea is to attract them to Burma - as far as possible from Japan and at the end of a long supply line. For this purpose, the British, Indian and Chinese forces in Burma will make noise around Akyab, Katha and Myitkyina, while engineering assets continue to expands bases on the railroad to Ledo, primarily in order to raise supply caps.

Western Australia:
Being supplied over the beaches, a ground attack at Exmouth reduces forts to 0 and causes heavy casualties on the Japanese side. Betties try to lend a hand, trading a Betty for a Kittyhawk on LRCAP.

SWPac:
Avoiding an attack by RO-67 just short of the destination, the US BBs bombarded Horn Island with average results, but find a Japanese DD in port - apparently a cripple. In the meantime multiple APDs dropped-off supplies at Portland Roads, avoiding attack by RO-68. Alas, shoddy staff work concerning the LRCAP air cover over the returning TFs resulted in a complete SNAFU (I shouldn't do turns at night, half asleep I botched the orders). The US fighters at Coen swept Horn Islands - witnessing the demise of DD Arashio - instead of protecting the fleet units. Netties promptly put torpedoes into APDs Alden, Barker and Parrott - all sunk - as well as into BB Mississippi, BB Idaho, BB Pennsylvania (2). None in danger of sinking, but they will be retiring southwards in "jumps" from base to base in the coming turns, this time under LRCAP. With Colorado having been hit last turn, 4 US BBs will need to go back to Pearl or CONUS for full repairs - *grrrr*.

CBI:
Making noise in Burma involves air attacks at Warazup, still held by a IJA Tank regiment - B-25s and Warhawks hit the tanks at low-level causing very slight damage.

Western Australia:
Exmouth liberated, one PC and one xAKL shuttling supplies to that base sunk by Betties. A bombardment force led by three R-class BBs plus cruisers and DDs coming up from Perth won't be needed, but made a dent in the IJN submarine force. The British carrier TF - CV Formidable, CV Illustrious, CVL Hermes escorted by British, Australian and Dutch CLs, CLAA and DDs - patrolling in the IO on the Perth - Cape Town track was finally rewarded for weeks of dull going back and forth when spotting and attacking a IJN raiding force build around CVE Taiyo - the poor Japanese carrier didn't even had a chance to strike back.

SWPac:
Having spotted enemy TFs at Port Moresby the turn before, I have sent a DD strike force and a cover force lead by a CL on a raid - going full-speed from Cooktown to PM to arrive at night, with low threat tolerance. But surprise - night surface battles of the "fire torps and run" kind are not the strong point of the US Navy at this point of the war. 3 DD lost and nothing to show for. The US Air Corps as well wanted show what they cannot do yet - B-26s with pilots in the 70+ skill range for naval bombing attacked into CAP, lost 9 and hit nothing.

SoPac:
Noumea hit hard by US light cruisers.

CentPac:
Funafuti seems to be void of troops, a quick grab might be possible.

NoPac:
Adak Island has reached size 4 port and size 3 airbase and has become the main base in the area, being home of the 28th Composite airgroup and various tenders to support the trip-wire "Yippies" patrolling the Midway - Aleutians gap and the subs patrolling the northern part of the HI. The Dewey ARD provide heavy repair capacities at safer Kodiak for the NoPac striking force - the old and lightly armoured sisters CA Pensacola and Salt Lake City plus the Porter class DDs with their single-purpose 5-inchers. In the lousy weather and with enemy air bases far away, this is the right place for DDs lacking DP guns.

Homefront / Rear areas:
Some reinforcements - BB North Carolina, CV Wasp, bunch of CLAAs and DDs are crossing the Pacific on the way to the front. Ground reinforcements - mostly base forces and engineering assets - start to pile-up in Conus due to lack of shipping available - most ordinary merchies are tied-up with upgrades, the valuable amphib shipping (future APA and AKA) is being repaired and readied in Auckland and Sydney for upcoming ops. BB Royal Sovereign - torpedoes three weeks ago - has fixed all fixable damage at Sydney and left for Cape Town to repair the remaining major damage.

NOTE: We have a house rule prohibiting massed Panzer blitzkrieg, i.e. large "tanks only" stacks of multiple tank regiments attacking on their own are not allowed. A lone tank unit can be used as maneuvre unit, for mopping-up stragglers, attacking undefended or lightly defended bases and as recon-in-force for example. In assessing the trade-off of bombers vs. enemy troop/device losses, I count only the destroyed squads/devices since the disabled ones can recover. The only time disabled devices count is if an attack by my LCUs is happening during the same turn. My general rule of thumb for 2-engined bombers is 10 destroyed squads/devices for one bomber. For 4-e bombers, more enemy assets must be destroyed. How many sort of depends on the aircraft model, since I get lots of some models but not so many of others.

Good hit on that CVE off Perth.....I assume that TF was waiting for a Cape Town to Perth AK convoy or something, and instead found the RN. Did you know it was there, or was that pure luck?

Those bombardments of PM....a reminder that base can be a trap for Japan. Basing planes there puts them at risk for exactly that type of bombardment.....

The British carriers have been patrolling the triangle between the Perth - CT transit route and the Carnarvon area for weeks, partly to guard against another raider intrusion (have suffered from that before) partly to provide distant support for the operation against Exmouth. TBH, I knew something had to be out there coming south when my CT-Pert convoys no longer made beelines but doglegs - bit cheesy but that's how the game works. The British carriers were close enough to take a look-see in the area north of the doglegs, and promptly found the raiders.
