Turn 8 Real time Ground Move

Ground Phase

For Kiev battles I have ground support turned on but I am not going to fly fighters. The Soviets don't have the Airbases in the area needed for intercepting ground support circled in yellow. I will leave them on rest and turn it back to Day missions if I have to.

Think I am going to save the game here and call it a night. Pick it back up tomorrow.

I hadn't thought of letting my fighters rest based on the distance to Soviet airbases - thanks for pointing that out. I'm not sure I would have had the guts to try it. Looking forward to see how this plays out.

Thank you Smokindave, but after sleeping on it last night I too am not going to take the chance. I will rest 1/2 of 4 squadrons next to Kiev, the rest will be on escort duty just in case the Soviet fighters react.

Kiev is attacked with 6 German Infantry Divisions. I try and match up 2 German Divisions per Soviet Division on an attack into a city that are also over 50 CCP. Kiev Falls and a mass migration of Soviets migrate from the city.

NOTE: I try and "not" use Ground Support in Cities. Cities have a ton of AA normally thus I don't.

Soviet stayed close feeling comfortable in the swamps. I love it when Soviets feel complacent. I should be able to bag 3 more Divisions or have units in locking ZOC's. Again I point out I am "not" going for VP's at the moment. It is all about Soviet units. Here we go.

Hasty attack the 256 Rifle Division, It retreats down the rail line to the east.

I move 14 PZ East one hex. I want penetration and dictation of where Soviet units retreat to.

I break 14 PZ down into regiments and move a regiment to the SouthEast. I need to clear 285 Rifle division from the bridge head and when I attack it I want it to go to the SE where 274 Rifle division is.

I then move Viking (Wiking) to set up an attack on the 259 Rifle Division. I do this for 2 reasons. First reason is to dictate the retreat path of 199 Rifle division towards the 132 Rifle Division hex after getting 259 Rifle division to retreat or route, I hope. (259 Rifle Division shows a 2 defense so I am hopeful)

1st and 2nd Regiment of 14 PZ hasty attack 49 Tank Division. The Tank Division retreats to where the Infantry in front of it retreated to

I turn on Ground support for Vikings attack. 259 Rifle Division could not bear the brunt & routes away from too much combat stress. No Soviet fighters intercepted.

I bring up the 168 Inf division and will Deliberate attack the 199 Rifle division. Hope to have it retreat to 132 Rifle Division hex.

The attack succeeds and 199 RD retreats on top of 132 RD. Everything is a dance when attacking with the Germans. Now the bridgehead is clear, time to expand.

I move up 57 Inf division to attack the already retreated Tank Division and Inf Division.

I deliberate attack and turn on Ground support again. Russian Fighters intercept from a bazzilion miles away. I barely squeek out a retreat & bag 15 Soviet fighters. Good thing I kept the fighters on Day missions.

I am going to try some across river attacks which are very very chancy but I am pretty rested. I move up two German Divisions and the Rumanian Cav for a Deliberate attack. I get a retreat.

I move up 11 & 13 PZ for the attack. I also make sure the HQ is within 5 hexes and the Army HQ within 15 to be on the safe side.
