Time for a nap. I'll need it for the fun part.. of packing icons into SHPs.

So, thanks to Matt R, I am now able to access the units icons.
My next stupid question is: How to find out what icon number is in which file?
If the unit editor says "icon 435", how to calculate the corresponding image # and the SHP file # the image is stored in?

There's a .txt file in the SHP folder named "Icon Data List-February 15."
You'll see a bunch of nonsensical lines like this -
{21700,21703}, //498.Churchill VII (green)
The first three numbers in parentheses tell you the SHP number, and the last two tell *should* tell you which tiles correspond to the hull and turret (though not always). The three digit number in front of the vehicle name is the icon number, and that's what goes into the Icon field in the OB editor. So for the Churchill VII here, you'll find it in Icon0217.shp, and the hull icon will be the first horizontal tile, and the turret will be the fifth horizontal tile. Ignore the diagonal icons, this is a holdover from SP1, I think, and is a serious waste of data. TCW was able to do away with this in their SHP files, I'm not sure how, though.
Another quirk which you'll have to work around is that the icon descriptions in the data list don't always correspond with what the OB editor says. For example, for the Panzer IV/70(A), which is correct in the editor, the icon data list says "PzJgd IV/70A," which is entirely incorrect (dafuq is a Panzerjagd?) So what I do is pull up the OB editor, find the unit I want to mod, locate its icon number in the editor, THEN pull up the data list, hit CTRL-F, enter the icon number, and search until I find it. Then pull up the SHP file.
Sounds maddening, but after you do it for a bit, it becomes reflexive. Again, if you run into any problems, PM me.

Matt, if I may give my two cents. I personaly edit SPWAW only for my own use and then if I think I have done something interesting I release it for others too.
I hear you, bro. I don't play it enough to want to mod it for my own use, but I always have the itch to draw something, and I want the community to have something.. it's a revolving door.
Thanks R2, I do value your input.
I say go for it and we (major mess) will put them out
The game right now is actually not using the 'right' vehicle icons anyway, in case no one noticed

terrain and building icons were redone back in early ENH versions by Tracer, I think they are fine as is
Sent you guys a PM

May I suggest a small tweak to the IS-3 tank graphic? I think the fenders should go over the wedge more on the front hull. I don't know how to explain it properly but attached is a screenshot that hopefuly shows it better. The upper pic is your graphic and the lower one has the graphics tweaked on the wedge/fenders. It's no big deal though!

That's interesting, I hadn't heard about ReactOS. I've got to take a look at that.
I tried ReactOS but it really is an incomplete and buggy Alpha version still. Currently it is unusable for playing SPWAW.
However I got SPWAW working with WindowsXP installed on Oracle's VirtualBox. I will post a small tutorial about it in more detail.

I do seem to remember someone, somewhere, probably during the Dark Days when Win 7 Ruled Supreme trying to run the game in a VM (I can't recall any of the details, and my Google Fu is failing me ATM ).
IIRC there were issues.
I want to say the game had serious lag, I can't remember.
Yes I can confirm that with Microsoft's Virtual PC 2007 SPWAW is unplayable. There is horrible lag and the sounds are bad too.

If you have Microsoft Office Excel or Open Office you can also see a good list of the icon/shp numbers in the file:

Hmm... there is no "Icon Data List-February 15" file existent in my game, and no xls files at all.
Can you upload the txt file for me?

If you have the 2016 download from Major Mess, the .txt is in the /SHP folder. All other versions, the .xls is in the main game folder.

Negative, Sir. My version might be very old. The harddisk it is on was dwelling in a shelf for several years until I had to add a second HD in my computer.
I also had no shped.exe in my chlanda folder. Just WaWed.exe and WaWmap.exe (or so).
Shped was no problem, since I was able to google and download it.
Had no luck finding those files for the icons, though.

Dang, man.
I'd download Major Mess's mod and use it from now on, if I were you. It's got all the good stuff and none of the bad stuff, haha!
TCW's modified SHPED is a bit more user-friendly. If you have WinSWW2 or WinSPMBT, just copy it from there to your WaW folder.
All of your icon files are in the /SHP folder, dunno why you're not seeing them. The icons are in files named Iconxxxx.shp or Terxxzx.shp. And you've also got all the menus and background art in there.

Richard, the SPWAW depot has a version of the Excel icon list here:
http://spwaw.com/phpBB2/download.php?id=22168
It is a .rar pack so you will need 7zip or winrar to unpack it.

Hey great! Thanks!
I'll get me that on a quiet day. 740 MB will take me 20+ hours to download.
