I am sick of 1,000 yard naval battles i just sunk the CV Saratoga at 1,000 yards way to much this range comes into play.

I think the issue is more so many night battles ( though they were common) . Quite a few Night battles ended up at this range ( or shorter) 1-8000 yards is quite common. Note the US Destroyer that raked a Kongo class from a few hundred yards and the Japanese ship couldnt depress her guns.

I have had similar problems with the Dutch navy. These guys are able to send TFs with two DDs and avoid being seen by my Mavises, avoid being attacked by my Netties, dodge around my escorts and sink my xAKs, if needed they can simply sink my IJN DDs, and then simply sail back to Java largely unmolested.

Fear the Dutch.

Yes, lots of historic battles happened at 1k yards. But, I can't think of a single one that STARTED at 1k yards. They worked down to that range, but even at night, they almost all started at 8K yards or more. Most daytime surface combats should start around the 20k to 30k range (which they do) and most night battles should start around 8k to 12k range (which they do not). I have no problem with the night (or day) battles working themselves down to 1k range, though.

Well, when I was sailing with the Dutch frigates in STANAVFORLANT, I can tell you that they got a lot of Heinekens aboard. Maybe the USN shouldn't be dry!!

The battles are taking weather into the visibility range. Bad weather should limit possibility of actual encounter first (as the ships could simply sail closely together and not knowing about each other), then to limit the visibility if combat happened.

Moonless night should allow visibility in larger scales, as sea is always darker than the sky thus projecting ship sillouetes.

What is the worst thing that could happen to each side is to get radar contact at 20,000 and due to visibility issues to start fire at 1,000 ... Fire first! Then ask....

These thinks should be looked onto...

Yep this is against the AI... I found the 1 DD escort surprising too!

I too sank the Ryujo at Jolo Is with surface forces in my vs AI game.

Except in mine I used a US SCTF force with Houston Boise and Marblehead, and the AI had both the Zuiho and Ryujo there. [:D][:D]

The strangest surface engagement I have had is a night battle at Kuching in which 2 Brit CL's annihalated the CA Maya without taking any return fire. I understand they were good at night action, but that good?

I agree 1,000 yard surface combat range should be a rare event with capital ships.

Doesn't it seem kind of odd, how Japanese naval forces seems to fair in night combat in 1941/1942?

I wonder if radar should even be a factor until 1943?

So are you going to tie a broom to the stem post of the Java to let the Japanese know you intend to sweep them from seas?

As has been mentioned before surface combat has been tweaked quite a bit for patch 2.
