Carriers are useful for the wars the US is likely to get into, where some place on the far side of the world needs to be plastered with smart bombs for whatever reason, and the other side has nothing more sophisticated than a twenty year old shoulder mounted SAM.

However, for such a purpose it's an awful lot of money to spend and I think when it comes to a war with another major power your post is by now more or less a truism.

The other albatross I suspect the US has around its neck is an unhealthy attachment to centralised control. One always sees in the movies the HQ watching the live footage from helmet cameras and giving orders from their comfy chairs, and more materially I recall one anecdote from the Iraqi invasion where an USAF pilot reported seeing coalition vehicles (with the chevron) and was told by HQ that there were no friendly troops in the area, that ipso facto they must be Iraqi troops, and that they should be fired upon. The pilot followed his orders and, of course, later found out that he'd just destroyed two British army vehicles.

All of this is bad enough as the HQ is never going to be best placed to make decisions, but what happens when the other guy promptly shuts down all your comms? The guys on the ground need to know what to do without being able to talk to another guy fifty miles away.

Going into a conflict where tech superiority is ensured you could easily use a cargo ship to launch aircraft. VTOL. They are what will ensure the demise of the super carrier. So many eggs in one very expensive basket.

the chinese are not highly trained, the entire military is corrupt worse than the soviet union with many high ranking positions bought instead of earned. china will not win they would be contained. also the different branches dont even communicate so it wouldnt be the USA vs a combined chinese military. imagine the japanese in ww2 how there branches bickered except worse. if you want to see some good videos breaking things down how it would go from an unbiased perspective check out this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3VqF2d ... tlegrounds

The thing is modern China is the master of soft power. Look how they control American businesses and celebrities by threatening to cut off their Chinese markets if they criticise China. In the meantime, China is buying influence around the developing world with major infrastructure projects which the west has dithered over for decades. China has absolutely no intention of fighting a war of the kind Russia has blundered into in Ukraine. Why should it? It can become top dog without one.
