BMP save file format

Hi.
Is there any particular format that I should be saving BMP files in ? If I take an original BMP file and make no modifications and then simply save it in GIMP -it defaults to a 24 bit R8 G8 B8 format- the game won't load it .
From the EDMAP.LOG file ->
