Then again, when the general is fearless enough to arrive on the battlefield riding a missile...

Looks like you have hired a pair of old drinking buddies (drunk) who like to hang out in college bars to pick fights (poor recruiter). On the bright side, I'm sure they're a riot at ceremonial galas.

I don't like the way traits are produced either. Basically they are produced when your characters are doing something or nothing, based on events at their locations. If they are doing something, there's a moderate chance you'll get a good trait. If they are doing nothing, there's a good chance they'll gain a bad trait. Generals get traits from fighting and troop recruitment at a planet. So as soon as they spawn, if you aren't actively fighting or recruit troops at their location, they'll get Drunk, Demoralizing, etc.
Same with leaders. Starting leaders are almost certainly guaranteed to get civilian ship construction speed, because that's what you are doing.

I admire their courage, but are they still a general if they're piloting a missile?
I don't even know how it has happened. The other appears to be operating the cannon of someone else's ship!

I agree that generated traits could be significantly improved for a better player experience. Paedri generated poor recruiter quickly, before I had started recruiting troops on the homeworld, and found himself deployed elsewhere in short order.
The most annoying traits are the colony happiness and colony income traits, which can significantly affect overall empire income and can end up as instant dismissal.

They could simply change the tick that generates traits to every month or every year, and make it truly random with some added weight for having characters do certain things. It's too easy to game the system now, and too damaging if you don't try to game it.

Until demotion - sure. While not necessarily a
good general, but it's still an interesting case of leading by example: hard to come up with a more spectacular way to lead the charge.

Oh, I'm sure he doesn't either

But, hey - getting your ass into random adventures is the whole point of indulging, no?

Just kick them out when they get a bad trait first, they'll respawn fast enough. Recruit a lot, and then keep recruiting non-stop. The drunkenness eventually stops almost completely and you get some very good ones. Due to decreasing stacking bonuses it's not worth having a particular trait more than three times per planet, and you can start exporting them to second tier worlds.
