Do the AVG squadrons in Burma and China eventually disappear and return as USAAF and Marine squadrons somewhere? I seem to remember someone mentioning this. When does it happen, if it does? Some of those pilots have piled up a lot of kills and experience.

I don't see any withdrawal dates for the AVG in my game, so I guess they do not go away and come back later. You can transfer the pilots you want to keep to the General Reserve (as opposed to the Group Reserve). After a delay they will be available as veterans that you can put into vacant pilot spots in your existing squadrons. There will be some restrictions around Nationality match and Service Branch for the US pilots.

They are all US Army pilots, the aircraft go to China.

Greg Boyington went on to be a Marine squadron commander.

He did? I always used him, if he survived, in the US Army Air Corp fighter units in the game.

In the standard campaign they are scheduled for withdrawal in mid 1942. At that point I imagine most players cache the pilots and the Chinese eventually get the planes.

The Chinese get the original planes, if the unit was upgraded to another aircraft then the US Army gets those planes.

It has always been a pisser that Boyington, the best pilot in the Allied inventory, is forced to remain an Army Air Force pilot for the duration of the war.

Put him in your best airframe, and keep him in the center of the action, and as long as he avoids getting killed, he will, more often than not, become the leading ace.

If Greg's AVG squadron is destroyed then he later shows up in the Marine pilot pool. I have him currently flying off of a carrier at the helm of VMF 214....GP

WHAT!!

I can't believe I have played literally dozens upon dozens of games and have never discovered this.

Thank you GP. Next game the AVG are going kamikaze. No more working to save the airframes.

Getting Pappy into the Marines is way more important than a few measly crates.

When his AVG squadron is down to peanuts I move them forward....GP

About every Grand Campaign I have played, Boyington is killed early... Go figure, but then, usually AVG is against pretty good Japanese units in Burma.

You're not the only one. I think the Japanese AI watched his 1970s TV series and has him pegged for early destruction.

I have been known to pull a mulligan and a do over on turn where Pappy gets killed. It's about the only thing I will pull a do over for.

He is almost always my leading ace. It's just doesn't feel right that he does so in P38s and P47s instead of a Corsair.
