map changes

I know that map changes are possible. I've seen that both JanSorensen and Lebatron have accomplished it (and thanks also to Lebatron for the assistance provided to changes in the official game!).
But it seems to me that it is not possible to have different scenarios all selectable but with different maps. I think that the game only looks one place for the map, so if you wanted to switch between, say, standard scenarios and modded scenarios with map-mods then you have to actually move around the map files.
Is that right?
As far as the standard map goes, I have two major gripes:
1) Eastern Sahara is impassible. It would be nice to make it rough and subdivide it so that supplies are harder to get to Sudan over land. Probably even divide Sudan in two.
2) the eastern USSR is too few zones. The main reason this is bad, in my opinion, is that it is far too easy for the Japanese to get supplies to troops in the middle of Asia without repairing rail. The Japanese can attack Western Siberia from Central Siberia by simply dropping supplies off on the coast at Irkutsk. That is supporting a campaign about 2000 miles from the coast, across rough terrain, using only sea transport!
I know that Lebatron has addressed (2) in his mods, but I prefer to stick to the stock game for simplicity (despite my own modding efforts in TripleA that Lebatron is aware of). Still, I appreciate the effort, especially where it has led to improvements in the stock game! I'm especially reluctant because as I understand it is a nuisance to hot swap between maps.
