Cavalry Corps

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

Cavalry Corps

Post by Malagant »

Historically, there were some units of cavalry attached to Corps, but there were also Corps composed completely of cavalry and horse artillery.

In CoG terms, has anyone found a strategic or tactical reason to do this?

I've done it just to simulate real OOBs, but have seen no advantage in doing so.

I tend to stick with the concept that a corps should be a well rounded balanced force of arms, so I usually have balanced corps with Inf, Cav, and Art....with the bulk being Inf.

The only thing in CoG terms that I could see potentially making this worthwile is if a general's bonus to cavalry charge were applicable to all units in his command, not just the unit he were attached to in a Tactical Battle.

Perhaps have a Corps of Cavalry would give it a higher Initiative in strategic movement, allowing you to get somewhere before the enemy does & therefore being the defender?

As France I've found that medium sized cavalry corps are helpful in chasing down errant single cossacks divisions. I set the battle on auto and try to wipe them out. I've also tried the same with Spanish guerrillas, but sometimes they repulse the cav, even if outnumbered 4 to 1 !!

Polish protectorate cavalry are an excellent source for these, although I have to buy and presumably maintain the corps to put them in.

Cav Corps independent of infantry have obvious and historical limitations in a DB though. However, given that units of the same corps move in series, such a corps could throw charge after charge at an enemy unit or isolated part of the line with hopes of wearing them down and breaking them, or, better yet, if the enemy is dislodged or disordered, the subsequent cavalry charges will do serioius harm.

But when an enemy cavalry corps comes for a mixed arm force of mine I just laugh while mycannon shatters them.

Another use for cavalry corps might be as reinforcements to a combined corps. Keep them back off the line in major wars ( when not using them to chase down things) and when attacked or attacking call them in to reinforce your well rounded corps.

Favoritism is alive and well here.
