RE: HARD LUCK WAR
ASF HQ, Main Base Ilyrian Region
"As it gets closer, keep me updated!" ordered the ASF Colonel.
"Ayr-aye, Sir!" was the reply from the monitoring station. "All enemy vessels converging over Main Base!"
Well, thought the Colonel, one ship at a time. First we nail that big one ...
As the enemy closed, it was time for all interceptor squadrons to launch. The colonel gave the order, and they all went in. Three good int and three older ones.
"Report!", ordered the Colonel.
"All INT engaged, sir! Raptor Squadron 1 out of Stratos base is catching heck! They have lost 70% of their strength, sir! Should they disengage?", ASF Sqdn. Comm officer asked.
"Negative, have all INT attack at point black range!", was the reply.
In low orbit the interceptor squadrons zoomed in towards the behemoth craft.
"Look at the size of that thing!"
"Wow! We're still 10 clicks out and look at it!"
"Pipe down!", Lightning squadron two's commander stated. "Now get in there and get hits!"
The Interceptors closed at 2000 kph. Soon, their ranged missiles and heavy cannons were ripping huge holes int the enemy craft.
Excited cheers arose from within the ASF headquarters as the enemy BC crashed just south of Main Base.
"OK, I want all INT to return to base ASAP! Reload! We have two more contacts, and nothing gets away!" ASF Colonel was out for blood.
continued ...

ASF HQ, Main Base Ilyrian Region
"What the ... monitor, what is that new contact?" the ASF Colonel asked, worried.
"New contact is friendly, Thunder ONE, Sir!" was the reply from monitoring station.
The ASF Colonel only shook his head. Well, he thought, if the ground-pounders want to get shot at while a raging ASF battle goes on around them, it was none of his business. "Report on Contact Two", he asked.
"Yes sir, all INT are engaging the Cruiser," was the reply.
"Good. I suppose Ground Command wants to check that downed BC before nightfall, as it looks like the CA is going down too!" The ASF Colonel could never understand those ground mission boys, heading for a downed enemy craft while enemy air contacts where THAT close.
Soon, the CA was shot down, and the scout. The ground mission against the downed BC was no big deal, very light casualties. The next day, however, the ground command sent a bunch of lesser-skilled soldiers to the downed CA. It was a blood bath. Somehow, they managed to win, with four surviving troopers. Nine were hospitalized.
What a war ....

RE: HARD LUCK WAR
3rd Quarter 2109 Summary (Jul/Aug/Sep)
Ratings Very Good/Good/Good [:)][8D]
Balances 3.288/4.774/4.874 (we are selling some artefacts and saving for better int - someday, sigh ...)
Missions for 3rd quarter 17 (missed 2 of 3 Terror in Aug, had no fuel in transy)
Top Kills for Each Month
Jul _____ WO Sarah Mcintyre ________ 10 kills
Aug ____ WO B.A. Barackus _________ 20 kills
SEP ____ 3 soldiers with 3 kills each
Top Kills for the Quarter = WO B.A. Barackus with 31 kills
(WO Sarah McIntyre had 26, WO Amra Corsair had 24, SSG Kelly Thompson had 21 while SGT Brian Uttsar only had 1 - but he sure was wounded often enough!)
Total Kills for 3rd Quarter = 235 (total war of 1198)
August was heck. Multiple BC sorties. We had 1 sct, 4 bc, 2 base assault, and 1 of 3 terror alone in August. Kills for that month were high, 141. July was kinda quiet, and September was a snooze (only 3 missions in SEP, sct, ftr, base recovery in Thermos).
High Command is letting the defenses go in Patria. We only get 20k a month even with a base and int there. An enemy BC landed there for recon, it was not messed with. Hopefully, the enemy will take that base and another base can be built in Seathopia.
Researched 7 technolgies, including the interrogation of the Enemy Commander that was captured well over a year ago. There were actually two slither Cmndrs. in the room .. dunno what they eat, but they kept well.
Almost all troopers have been outfitted with alien hardware. R&D has come up with some better armor, as well. Although the chem protection is no better than the Rat, the engineers have produced new armors for all troopers since the other areas are better. Along with Bee armor, coverage is good for all soldiers (no one has rat armor).
The new weapons work far better than high command hoped for. Old enemies are easy pickings once again. The enemy always responds with better and newer, so all commands are on watch alert.
ASF HQ has shot down several BC, but usually lose a Raptor in the process. Still, the only new tech on the Raptor's is the advanced cannon, so replacing them is easy. (3 lightning, 3 Raptor on Ilyrian continent, 1 more Raptor in Thermos).
Four soldiers are now Warrant Officers (Sarah, B.A., Nancy and Amra). Several others are very close. There are only a few SFC left, as almost the entire command are Staff Sergeants now and only 3 SGT's remain.
Missions during this period were = 3 sct, 3 ftr, 4 bc, 2 base assault, 2 base recovery, and 3 terror)
(Although August took forever, September was nice and slow. October will probably be heck again. Playing thru August took 10+ hours, wow.)
(My longest mission was 200+ turns as the enemy kept moving behind me in an enemy base. I was down to 5 troopers, and we stayed together because the enemy was very tough for what I had left. As soon as I cleared one area of the enemy base, the remaining 2-3 aliens would move away to where I wasn't. Eventually I went back to the entrance and waited ... as soon as the aliens smacked one of my poeple I cleaned them up. Yikes.)

RE: HARD LUCK WAR
I took the day off and started a fun game on Normal. Something about the stress was getting to me ...
Wow! Is it easier on Normal! I forgot how much. It is SO NICE to be able to drop grey's with just 2 hits .. and with rifles, no less! On hard it almost always takes three. I remember that Mechies can be killed with just a single flamethrower attack on Normal, but almost never on Hard! Oh, and is it just me or is my sight range better on Normal... Also, my very long ranged accuracy, with same stats and same weapons, seems a tad bit better on Normal than Hard.
Unfortunately, I miss my old team. Guess I will have to get back on the morrow with the old game. Finally have Plasma in it, so we shall see.
(sometimes Hard difficulty feels like a marathon. Missions are a lot, um, harder.)

Sight range is the same no matter the difficulty, I just FEAR the enemy more on hard ...
Went to Patria in early OCT 2109 for a downed scout with the old squad (hard game). How dangerous can a little scout be, right? I figure no problem. Especially with BMan's damaged ship mod. Well, we tangled with 3 K-floaters and 3 mechies. Lost 4 squadies and had 7 of 10 go visit the doctor. Yeow.

RE: HARD LUCK WAR
4th Quarter 2109 Summary (Oct/Nov/Dec)
Ratings Good/Excellent/Good [:)] [:D] [:)]
Balances 3.117/3.433/5.030
Missions 3/4/4 (69 for the year, 120 total, spotted 283 UFO contacts so far in the war)
Top Kills for each month
OCT ______ WO Kelly Thompson ____ 7 kills
NOV ______ WO Joe Mama _________ 9 kills (20 for the quarter, tops [8D] )
DEC ______ WO Amra Corsair _______ 9 kills
Sarah McIntyre is now a Lt! (1898 experience)
Total Kills in this quarter = 153 (war total 1351)
October was actually kinda slow, thankfully. Went to scout, BC and a base recovery in Thermos.
November was not too bad, either .. except at the end. Had only a scout until the aliens captured Peloponesia (recon to another landed BC), and then ASF shot down a second BC near the end of the month just as we were getting ready to go with the A-squad to the islands. So, we went to the downed BC with a second team. Luckily the aliens only had brown monsters and grey shooters at the downed BC. The base, however, was another matter, as mechies and slithers were everywhere. We did well, tho.
December seemed slow. Sort of. We had a landed, damaged BC in Pulsar, another base recovery to Thermos, and two Terror missions. The first Terror was easy enough, greys and browns again. But the second one .... Yikes! Mechies and metal floaters. Sarah died getting off the ship, and B.A. and Nancy followed soon after. With the top three brass on the floor the rest of the team had to take the battle to the enemy. Er, well, we had only nailed two of the aliens by that time, and soon lost a fourth trooper. Staying in the shadow of Thunder One, the team deployed a defense line but the enemy hit HARD from long range with Ion cannons. Kelly, with 103 AP, pulled recon duty and soon the odds were only 3 to 1 against us. The enemy kept coming, But big Joe's Heavy Plasma did well and all remaining troopers had either Plasma or, better yet, Ion rifles. Sven, last off the ship, opened up on anything he saw with a new, big toy --- heavy ion, and then it was only 2 to 1 against us, after which we moved further into the city, across a wide street. Patience paid off, and it was only 1 to 1 and then there were few enemy left. However, we were down to only six soldiers, and WO Amra Corsair had taken several mega-hits so his accuracy dropped like a rock. Kelly and Alyssa went on recon patrol, checking buildings, as the other four stayed in a defensive square (Joe, Amra, Sven, and Dipstick Noogie). Won the battle, and the Heavy Ion Cannon lugged around by new team memeber Sven Maple did a heck of a job. All the civvies died [:(]. Tough fight.
Researched techs
Oct = 2 techs (finished plasma)
Nov = 1 tech
Dec = 6 techs (wow, ion is easy to research!)
Ended year with a standard Lab and 4 workshops
3 Lightning
4 Raptor
Bases in Stratos, Medie, Pulsar, Thermos and Patria (no INT in Patria)
(It is taking longer to play through some months. In this war, one wrong move in tactical and the battle is lost. Some missions take quite a while, November, for example, had a long BC mission and a very long base assault. The base recovery missions are not too bad, as we are VERY familiar with our own base, but still.)

Good stuff!!!!! Hang in there. I just got my butt kicked on a simple Cruiser mission.We landed in a courtyard and had to go through some new building i've never seen before and those dreaded Inquisitors just rolled us up.Of 12 people only 5 came home safely and the rest had injuries from 12 days to 36 days.

1st Quarter 2110 (Jan/Feb/Mar)
Ratings Excellent/Excellent/Very Good [:D] [:D] [:)][8D][;)]
Balances 3.826/3.250/3.318
Missions 20 (6/7/7, 6 sct, 5 ftr, 2 bb-landed, 1 base aslt, 4 base rec, 2/3 terror)
Top Kills for each Month
Jan _________ WO Joe Mama ________ 9 kills
Feb _________ WO Kelly Thompson ___ 11 kills
Mar _________ WO Kelly Thompson ___ 10 kills
Research
Jan _______ 4 techs
Feb _______ 5 techs
Mar _______ 3 techs
Well, ok. Jan was easy enough. Then, in Feb, a BB showed up and things got tougher. Flame spitters and ion-floaters were discovered at a Fighter site, and when we went to our very first BB (landed, not shot down) we ran into hover-thingies. Tough month. Still, we won all battles on the first-try, and fought hard. R&D came up with some very nifty weapons, and the health instructor was happy to note that most soldiers had the strength to carry the new weapons. We also encountered a 4th new enemy, similar to the floaters, but they died easily enough.
The enemy is attacking closer to home as they took the base in Medie in late March. With Inferno base falling 3 times, twice in Feb, it was a hectic month. We missed several missions, against a ftr, ca and terror (all down at same time), in March as we prepared for an assault on an enemy base in Syrtis Major to close out the quarter.
Although we have nice new weapons and some coolio vehicles, R&D is working feverishly on the remains of the four new aliens. Maybe something will turn up.
That BB is tough, lost a Raptor to one shot. We have damaged a few of them, but cannot fight for long as it is a huge ship. We have explored two of them so far, and what fun!
Error: It was reported in last quarter of 2109 that 4 workshops were at Main Base. There are only 3, and 1 standard Lab (keeps costs down).

RE: HARD LUCK WAR
1 April 2110
High Command has decided to redesign the main base. A new lab and possibly additional workshop area will be added once the Surgery is moved to a better location. This will, unfortunately, lower our current workshop space, but the setback will only be for about a month.
In any event, supplies are well stocked on the correct ammunition rounds for all weapons. Only 3 soldiers are below 60 in strength, and many are at 70+. [:D]
(so much for the single lab experiment ... it was good while it lasted, hopefully the cost will not be a problem)

Very good read. I have to admit, the information does give me a way to point my story. Gooid luck with your game, mate.

Ratings Exc/V Good/Exc/V Good/Exc/Very Good [:D][:)][8D][;)][:D]
Ending Balance in DEC 2.075
Missions this Half year 28
BB shotdown 2
Ad Workshop is very busy building high tech armor and last tech weapons. Still with only 1 Lab, so there will be many missions in 2110 as there are a HORDE of techs to research (but not for the troops!)
When engaged with 1 particular BB, somehow 2 lightning's were killed in the final shots ... so int's are a little down atm. (1 tech 3, 1 tech 4, 1 tech 2, and a few raptor's).
1 of each tank type sits at main base throwing rocks and collecting dust.
All troopers are approaching Warrant Officer and two have strength 90 (so we can field the best armor, just to have it). Everyone else has strength 70+.
The War continues ....

RE: HARD LUCK WAR
Second Quarter 2111 (Apr/May/Jun)
Ratings Excellent/Excellent/Excellent [:D] [:D] [:D]
Balances 2.330/3.240/2.412
Missions 8/5/4
Researched another 6 techs (7 in the first quarter)
I had to cut back on using the 30 workers in mid-May. Funds were VERY tight and I do not want to sell all of the alien hardware just yet. Started some big-ticket items but stopped production as money was very low. This allowed me to lower the daily fees from 70k per day to 52k per day. I also sold some worthless base defenses (the BB just take the base anyway, especially when they get 2 shots first). Currently, daily costs are 62k, so 1.86 million per month just for the operating costs.
Interceptors
4 Raptor
1 LTN
1 Storm
1 Exter
1 Wolf
1 Diver
These cost! However, if a BB comes over Ilyria these are enough to take it down. The three top INT can take out a BC alone. I have only 1 Hangar at each secondary base, and I do not have a base in Pelo. or the South Pole. 1 Raptor is at the North Pole and another in Thermos (for the casual SCT or FTR contact). A third Raptor sits in Medie and the last one is in Pulsar. Working on researching the JAG now and that will fill Main Base. I also have one small building slot open in MB but there is nothing I need and can afford. I have 1 standard Lab and 1 Ad Workshop.
Sarah needs 400 xp to reach Colonel ... [8D]

RE: HARD LUCK WAR
July 2111
Rating Very Good [:)][8D][;)]
Balance 2.575 million
Missions 8 (sct, ftr, ca, bc, bc, bb, base aslt, base recovery)
223 missions total in the war so far! Almost 500 UFO contacts, as well
Researched 3 techs (2 for Cent. and JAG!)
Top Go Getters for July
Major Sarah McIntyre _________ 14 kills
Major Joe Mama ______________ 10 kills
Captain Juma M'binga __________ 9 kills
July was a rough month. A 10-day span in mid-month saw 6 of 8 of the missions, including a landed BB, crashed BC, Ftr, CA, Base Assault and a Base Recovery. Total kills for the month were 107, kinda high. Funds equaled out, as just enough is kept for operating costs and to purchase new items in production. (Too much money in savings seems to bring on the Terror civvy missions imho.) Started producing a final set of ASF gear (shields, missile launcher, cannon) for the JAG. It will not all be ready until mid-August.
Mission after mission after mission ... it never stops. The Final Mission will be very welcome, if it ever arrives. Of course, building all of the special parts has not even passed the enter stage, so it is going to be a while.
========================================================
I changed the files some. The ranks were altered, as well as the cost to sell back goods (now at 50% instead of the default amount). Unfortunately I had already sold most of the old stuff, but that is ok. Also, some file typos were changed ('In Hospital', for example). The changes will be in place for the next game. I also think that strength 90 is outrageous, so lowered it to 80 on the top armor. For one thing, there are no guns that require such strength. Of course, I already have three soldiers with high strength, so again this change will be for next game. Besides, the top armor is not the best, it only keeps the AI honest (so that wimpy gas-floaters show up on occasion).
edit: Also, I changed BMan's hospital-wounded factor from 4 to 3, so even with surgery some soldiers stay in the hospital longer (2, 6, and even 11 days). Still, the old, vanilla version had troopers healing at different times, while with the mod some soldiers come out from the hospital at the exact same time/day. End edit.
Here are my current rank settings:
SOLDIER_RANK1=Recruit
SOLDIER_RANK2=Private
SOLDIER_RANK3=Corporal
SOLDIER_RANK4=Warrior
SOLDIER_RANK5=Squad Leader
SOLDIER_RANK6=Sergeant
SOLDIER_RANK7=Staff Sergeant
SOLDIER_RANK8=Force Commander
SOLDIER_RANK9=Lieutenant
SOLDIER_RANK10=Captain
SOLDIER_RANK11=Major
SOLDIER_RANK12=Colonel
I think this better reflects a Futuristic Science-Fiction High Technology environment. Besides, Warrant Officers went the way of the dinosaur about 20 years ago (after the last one retired, if I remember correctly).
The Leader ranks (squad, force) are nice for the mid-game, since I usually only care about the exact rank of my top soldiers.
Furthermore, after this game I am going to alter the experience point requirement for promotion, so that they are something I can remember and they make sense. Some of the current numbers are kinda weird. They will still be very close to the original, but more even (like, Colonel is 5000 xp.)
Over 1/2 of my missions are against the the alien top dogs - Phantoms and Terror hovers. On occasion I get a nice break and have to fight something a little more sane.
Anyway, this is a very long war, with only one standard lab for research and one ad workshop, it takes a while. Still, I am almost all through making armors and guns. (18 particle rifles take a while, as well as adv mind shields. Sarah uses a particle rifle at all times, everyone else carries one 'just in case' it gets rough, so this keeps part-rfl-ammo in stock. Everyone else uses EEEW.)
Oh, also, I have not used a tank since Era 1 ended. I have one of each, but they just sit at MB collecting dust (it takes too long to rebuild them if they die).
Everyone is very high rank (Lt.+) and we nail the enemy easily, even on HARD difficulty. Well, not that easily, but we win! [:D]

RE: HARD LUCK WAR
August 2111
Rating Very Good [:)][8D][;)]
Balance 2.661 million
Missions 9 (Ftr, BC, BC, BC, BB, BB-Landed, Base Assault, Base Recovery, Terror)
Top Kills for August
Captain Dave Thorman _______ 24 kills
Captain Sven Maple _________ 16 kills
Major Amra Corsair __________ 11 kills
Captain Susan Day __________ 10 kills
Colonel Sarah McIntyre _______ 9 kills
Captain Noogie Dipstick _______ 9 kills
Well, after the ruckus of July I expected a break. The aliens had other plans. The month started out with a crashed BC and then a Fighter. Several craft were blown up in mid-air, limiting the ground missions somewhat. Then, after the 15th, all heck broke loose. Except for a base recovery mission to Thermos on the 30th, all of the other missions were from the 16th thru the 26th ... WOW! The Transy had to abort a Base Assault to Peloponesia twice since enemy ships showed up and the transport was vulnerable. Finally, late on the 26th the enemy was met in combat. The base was similar to the one from my first story, posted earlier. I believe there were as many as 31 enemy aliens infested there. All nasty top-dogs (phantom and terror craft). It was a long mission. Sarah made Colonel, finally, on the last mission (base recovery to Thermos). She was in the hospital most of the time.
Strange how some soldiers are in the right place at the right time. Somehow, Dave racked up 24 kills. This was just after I decided on the final 18 soldiers ... originally, he was not included, so I added him to the missions and he performed well. Juma went on most of the missions this month as well, but only managed 1 kill.
Kill total for the month 126 (2585 total for the war)
Missions total for the war so far 232
Researched another 3 components for the large craft
It will take several months to research commanders that have been captured as there is a large back log of them.
The only nice missions were a BC with Era 1 floaters and snakes, and the Terror mission (for once). The Terror had only brown Hallies ... very nice. Most of the rest were nasty.

RE: HARD LUCK WAR
ORIGINAL: Zalandar
Good stuff!!!!! Hang in there. I just got my butt kicked on a simple Cruiser mission.We landed in a courtyard and had to go through some new building i've never seen before and those dreaded Inquisitors just rolled us up.Of 12 people only 5 came home safely and the rest had injuries from 12 days to 36 days.
By the way, I had thought about it but I forgot to thank Zalandar for the post ... THANKS! [8D]
