The lake being referred to in Africa is Lake Chad. It had 10,000 square miles of surface area in 1963 and now has 839 square miles.
USMC: 1970-1977. A United States Marine.

IIRC, the only operational WW2 carriers with a port island were a couple of IJN ones - one of the Hiryu/Soryu did, the theory being it would be easier to operate their airgroups simultaneously with that set up. Turned out to be incorrect. there were a lot more carriers with no island at all than port islands.

Not that it's relevant, and a fair few people probably know this already but as an aside;

The reason that carriers usually have their island to starboard is that when the RN started experimenting with carriers they used a lot of rotary engine 'planes. Most rotary engines rotated to the left, and the massive torque tended to pull the plane that way. It was decided that having an island where a plane would be pulled to would be 'a bad thing' TM So the island was placed to starboard.
