Windows Help Disabled?

Post by BK6583 »

I thought every aspect of this series was FULLY compatible with Vista. I'm getting those same @#%$ annoying screen pop ups about why "Help" no longer works. Am I missing something or is there an easy fix?

If you are running Vista, MS no longer supports the .hlp format. Another company has posted a lengthy work around for its customers.

We'll check into this on Monday, BK - but as far as I know Adam's correct. We'll see what we can do as far as a workaround as well.

Something like http://www.dailysofts.com/program/92/39 ... erter.html should do the trick. From .rtf you can go to most every other format (.doc, .pdf etc...).

As people have said the help format used in previous versions of Windows has changed for Vista, and Microsoft if their wisdom failed to put in any backwards compatibility support. There is some good news though, and that is they have seen the error of their ways and released an update that allows the old style help to be used under Vista.

The fix can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

And maybe 'Thread Title of the Week' too. After all 'Windows Help Disabled' can be read in a number of ways- for instance that Windows users are all inherently handicapped and need Microsoft's Help to get around the virtual world. Or perhaps it should have been 'Windows Disable Help' or 'Windows Cripple Help'.
