How do I aim this thing?

Post by Crapgame54 »

Having great fun learning the campaign from the Lufwaffe side, plotting raids then riding along in a bomber. But on the He 111 I'm not sure how to aim the lower gun. Any suggestions?

Yes, the Germans gun is not built for careful aim. The historic accuracy of the guns was was so poor maybe the aim did not matter all that much. I like the upper gun sight much better. When I aim the lower gun I aim for the middle of the two sights and watch the tracers for adjustments. I can at least scare them off me and get a hit if I am lucky (which is what the German gunner did as well, I bet).

Its virtually impossible to hit anything with the guns. I can get odd strike but that is it. WWII bomber guns were all about pot luck. The US used interleaving arcs of fire in their formations to fill the air with as much lead as possible. Accurate shooting was very hard.

Yes, the Bomber guns were historicly inaccurate. The Bomber gunners accuracy is modelled in BOBII based on skill level. Fly a Instant Action mission (Interceptions, Rear Attack against Bombers,) you fly a RAF fighter (skill level hero) and set the LUF BOMBER skill level at Novice. Then try the same mission with the Bomber skill level at Hero.

Yes, Hero in IA is very interesting

even better to get a good feel for it, pick attack rear bombers, and then when it starts pick out the bomber in the middle of the pack for the attack you want to make

I use the belly gun on the Heinkel almost exclusively because the AI seems to like to attack by swooping down and coming up from below.

The way the gunsights work is to help you 'lead' the fighter. It seems counter-intuitive but you should put the right gunsight on the fighter when they are attacking on or moving to your LEFT and the left gunsight when they are attacking on or moving to your RIGHT. This is because you have so little time to react that you need to start with the shot already ahead of the fighter and then adjust it. It helps you more quickly get a lead on the incoming fighter.

In the picture above, you may be able to see what I mean. With the left gunsight on the fighter moving right, the barrel is pointing where the aircraft will be, rather than where it was...

Occasionally of course the fighter will be dead center, in which case it is an easy shot anyway and you don't need to lead him!
