A "Generic" Game

Commander – Napoleon at War is the second in a series of high level turn based strategy games. It spans the Napoleonic Wars from 1805 to 1815, allowing players to control France or the Coalitions against it through the entire period or in shorter scenarios. Easy to learn, with fun and addictive gameplay, this is a Napoleonic wargame in the style of the old "Panzer General".

A "Generic" Game

Post by Toby42 »

Correct me if I'm wrong. This game does not have an order of battle. You produce generic units to move and fight with and you have to purchase leaders? Leaders do not enter the game at the historical times?

Correct - but, to be fair, that's what it as sold as. This is beer and twiglets (much better than pretzels - and I'm British by habit if American by birth) war gaming. This game is napoleonic fun - not napoleonic realism.

Not that that's bad! I was just trying to make sure what it was. I'm getting tired of WWII games and GGWBTS is a "Heavy Load" to bear.. I would imagine that the named leaders give it a little historical feeling? I'm just not sure why you would have to purchase them?

You're not wrong at all. This game is highly generic. Like I mentioned, for example... what is a "corps" of light infantry meant to represent? [&:]

Remember, no linked scenarios here either, no nurturing a Pz1 unit to a highly experienced King Tiger unit across the years...

The generals you can buy though are given historical names and portraits.

If this game had more "Historicity" in it, I might purchase it. But it doesn't sound like it's what I would like. I'm not sure why you would have to "Buy" leaders? Why wouldn't they show up as they did historically?

I would love to find a good operational Napoleonic game. I don't want to build units. I don't want to build infrastructure. I don't want to manage the economy. I just want to fight a camaign with a historical representation of the actual units/leaders that were involved. Oh well, I'll keep waiting!!

Do you have this title? I guess I have not looked at it! I'll have to read the forum and see what it's all about... Thanks
