How do you protect a convoy

How do you protect a convoy. Send naval units to the general vicinity along its route ?? How do you know what port is its destination. ?? Frankly, as the French I can't seem to protect them at all.

As the French, if you were playing a human Coalition opponent, you should have zero fleets left after the third turn.

But if you are AI guy, you cannot predict the route so it is as you thought, you can put fleets in the general vicinity and that is it.

But then, in that time period thats about the best that can be done with no instantaneous communication. Sit in a patrol zone and hope your convoys get to you or enemy convoys show up unescorted.....
