AA gun carrier game mechanics qn?

Post by Lasarian »

Hi, just trying to mod an historical AA gun carrier used by the IJA, for use with a motorised battalion. Basically it's just a Type 94 6 wheel truck with flat bed and a Type 98 20mm AA cannon loaded on the back, which could also be offloaded and fired from the ground. My question however is how the game mechanics treat it when calculating AA defense. If, in the editor, I define the device as a vehicle (type 25), albeit with AA characteristics, rather than an AFV (22) or an AA Gun (12), does that affect how it performs in combat and in movement? Does the software distinguish between device types when processing the turn? If I have to define it as an AA Gun instead, won't I lose the mobility/speed for the battalion overall as it gets treated like a static/infantry unit? Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

I think the mobility is defined at unit level, if you want motorized, well the speed movement of it, unfortunately you only can choose armored. What you put there doesn't matter for the propose. This is the mobility issue.
Check this excellent mobility chart tm.asp?m=3710893&mpage=1&key=Terrain%2C ... s&#3710893

For combat you can check already existing weapons/vehicle/AFV. The developers know the code.
I suppose you can have a truck with gun classified in editor as an AA weapon but maybe that is not the correct one.

Thanks for the reply, Dili, learning a lot here :)
So I take it from that reply, that I can also define it as a vehicle device in the editor and it will still count towards the unit's air defence value?

Did you checked the editor? I advised you to check with database editor if there is an AA gun defined as a vehicle or AFV. if there is it might mean they can work as AA.

I remember that are artillery classified as AFV (SP guns) , so that implies that an AFV can work as artillery but i don't know how AA works since you don't give order AA to fire as you do to bombard or attack.
So it is possible that the vehicle that has the AA capabilities but it is not classified as AA only defends itself and not the unit.

This is speculative. So only a person that knows will answer correctly.

I think you have done correctly. The device is an AA weapon: neither an AFV, nor a simple Vehicle. Device characteristics should follow the primary use of the weapon.

The mobility of an individual Device is irrelevant. The mobility of the owning LCU is controlling.
