New Scenario: Britannia

Post by RedLancer »

This scenario is a pure flight of fancy which I'm posting only because players seem to have enjoyed 4OHL. I have always been fascinated by equipment that never quite made it in time, if at all, and this scenario includes a whole range of them.

This scenario is a modification of the 43 scenario and is based on the premise that in Aug 40 the British make big changes to engine development. The Rolls Royce (RR) Vulture and Peregrine are cancelled as is the Napier Sabre. Engine production is concentrated with RR for inlines and Bristol for Radials. Development is focussed on improving the Merlin and Hercules and longer term work on the Griffon and Centaurus.

In game terms the Sabre powered Typhoon and Tempest V are replaced by the Griffon powered Tempest III and the Centaurus powered Tornado and Tempest II. The Whirlwind gets new Merlin engines. No Sabre means no MB3 crash, Val Baker survives, and the MB5 enters service. I can now add other Centaurus powered aircraft like the Buckingham, Shetland, Warwick, Manchester Mk II, Buckmaster, Brigand and the Hawker Fury.

Things are not all additions though. The British do not get many of the Lend Lease aircraft. Only Kittyhawks and Baltimores are still provided. With better tank production the British do not get any Shermans (although the Canadians do).

Extract the zip to the Dat folder to include the new artwork.

This scenario has not received the usual official extensive testing so if you think things could be improved let me know.

Have fun.

Excellent.

Did a quick flick, TempestIII(PR) has 4 x 50cal, wouldnt they have 20mm?
Whirlwind II, max speed 294mph, with Peregrines it was aroubd 360mph?

I gave the Tempest III reduced armament for higher fuel as it is a recon only aircraft.

I think Whirlwind II would have been heavier with Merlins. I think I found the numbers on a what if forum.

IMHO, Tempest would be armed recce like Mustang I, if limited arms & being British I'd consider 4-6 x .303 (they looked at 12 x .303) or 2 x 20mm.

While the Whirlwind would be heavier, it would have at least 50% more horsepower (1400hp Merlins proposed) Keeping similar speeds but maybe a bit less maneuverable.

[:D]You can argue forever about hypothetical performance.

Played about 10 turns, no problems.

I like the splitting of Bomber Command & 8 AF, you see a wider range of targets hit.

Allies are knocking down the Luftwaffe at nearly 2-1, there wont be any Luftwaffe soon.

I'd like to see the Commonwealth Armour move further from the Sherman, Canadians can have the Eam or Grizzly. Also, IMVHO, the Cromwell should be the 6pdr version with the 75mm upgrade coming later.

We can always amend some stats and add some Canadian vehicles. I'm not professing expert knowledge on any of the new stats. Most were educated guesses with input from info I could find.

Having a lot of fun playing this...only one odd bug so far. British armor has the correct 43 TOE except for the Avenger. Its showing in the TOE with a number of 0...plenty in the pool, it just will not send them out. So far in Jan 44 no Brit armor has the hvy cav tank in their lineup.

edit.....took till March of 44 before Brit arm div began to take hvy cav tanks despite there being a rather large stockpile of them. Hard to figure.

Looks good.

Someone should combine this with the 4th Supreme Command Campaign.

Some of the 43 TOEs have no Avengers - can you provide more detail please.
