I am a big fan of GG games. I do not see them as simulations, but as games with an excellent feel for the challenges of the period. WITE provides the best feel for the Eastern Front of any board or computer game that I have played.
One thing I do not see in the battle messages is Close combat tactics. It seems the 7.xx mm weapons engage, but I have yet to see two or more infantry squads take close quarters casualties. In the case of a Russian massed "berserkers" attack that might be additional casualties on both sides. The kind of attrition that might be expected.

Until then, the combat system for the attacker heavily weighs artillery for the attacker. I do not know the other factors for the previous postings that had Soviet guns (like TO&E of the support units), but drag in art SU's into an attack and you will see the defense take at least disruption results. Disruption equates to the device or squad not participating in the combat any further. Because the attacker at longer ranges take first shots this is an advantage to the attacker. However, not suppressing the defense, and because the Germans have lots of native longer ranged devices -- once the ranges start to close the casualties start to accumulate.
