Is there a danger of lowering the mood or killing private enterprise through too high taxes?
Is there a maximum level recommended that does not cause social consequences yet?

The best taxes are the highest. If necessary you always put taxed credits back into the private investment again and maybe even earn some happiness from it.
There is a limit to how high you can set taxes before bad events start happening as people get annoyed. How high depends on your government profile. I don't remember the breakpoints and limits offhand atm.

You have to worry about sales taxes being too high but not income taxes. People are always going to be making an income but buying things aside from food is optional.

I usually find income tax of 40% to work. You go higher and you start to get some bad events. Anyway, keep an eye on it and adjust as required.

I find 30% service tax and 50% sales tax proficient for strong empire growth. Income tax is practically a chokehold on economic growth.

It's the private economy that pays for trade tax, it's part of the debt mechanic. I didn't investigate service tax but I would be surprised if it printed money.

Service tax is not a money printer, administration skills from your governor boosts the income generated from your cities and getting taxes from only that part is what I consider putting fresh oil into the machine. I only mentioned that high income tax, while you might consider better than service tax, is worse due to GDP getting affected over time.
