AV Wright in Fast Transport TF

Post by Yaab »

scen001 v5

AV Wright arrives in Pearl Harbor. It is an auxiliary ships with 2380 cargo capacity.

Surprisingly, AV ships can be added to Fast Transport TFs. When I added AV Wright to a Fast Transport TF, her cargo capacity went down from 2380 to 4, which is the number of her aircraft capacity.

I guess there may be problem with AV Wright in the Editor.

The cargo capacity does not go down, that number 4 is showing how many aircraft that AV Wright can operate while in a task force. It is just like any other ship that can operate aircraft.

You are right.

I created a Fast Transport TF with AV Wright only.
I then created a Surface Combat TF with a CA and transfered its float plane group to AV Wright. Wright's capacity is now 4/4.
Next I set AV Wright to load supplies, and then, on the ship's screen, its says supplies are loaded into Wright's 2380 cargo capacity.

It seems it is just a display issue.

It's because the Langley class can carry ac and operate them at sea, they are more akin to mine CVEs with the added ability to carry cargo. The other AVs do not carry ac and therefore cannot operate at sea.

The problem is, why are AV ships allowed to participate in Fast Transport missions at all?

AV ships are slow, unwieldy, big and are specialised for seaplane support. Their cargo load is as big as any xAK/AG ship. All other allowed Fast Transport-classes (AVD, AVP, APD, PC, PG etc) - these I can picture moving with some supplies on deck/fuel drums on deck. AVs not so much.

It would make more sense to make AG class elligible for Fast Transport missions.

I believe they were used in that roll due to their large capacity even though they were slow. Tangier at Wake and various Japanese tenders during the Guadalcanal campaign.
